What a beautiful morning.

Calm, frosty on the grass (and wood bridges), mist rising over the rivers and lake. Light Friday traffic. Only one aggressive/inept/dangerous driver (a school bus, PG county bus number 3041, route 325, by the way, who failed to stop or even yield at a stop sign on Ridge Road at Crescent Road in Greenbelt — right in front of the police station of all things!).

Another day, another (near) perfect commute!

Does this mean it’s studded tire time? I think it was 28F when I left home.

If it is frosty, I just ride carefully. I don’t usually break out the studded tires until there’s packed snow or ice. Sometimes if it is really slushy the tread pattern on the Nokians helps. Loose snow is the domain of cross tires or the mountain bike for me.

That’s the way I roll. Some feel better with studs… some will ride most or even all of the winter without them.

Nope — no accumulating snow in the long term forecast yet. Although weather forecasting is uncertain, especially forecasting the future, I’ll go out on the limb and say you won’t need snow tires until after Christmas (at the earliest).

Right now, the weather pattern favors storms in the west, and occasional cold fronts and rain days but no big winter storms or bitter cold for the east coast.

24F when I left this morning. Beautiful frost-covered grass in all directions, ice on the cars, ice on the surface of the drainage lake. For the first time this year, I donned the tights and jacket (been riding in shorts and short sleeves). I can handle the cold, just didn’t feel like it.

MAN was it nice out though!

Great morning. However, somehow forgot to put my wool socks on, which came back to bite me in the ass right around the 7 mile mark. Anyone else see the speed rollerblader (not sure that is a thing but the clap skates) this morning? Totally rad.

Wow, you guys sure get up early. When I headed out it was 47 degrees and very sunny. Gorgeous sunset yesterday – lots of reds, purples, blues….wish I’d brought my camera.

The evening commute was equally gorgeous. I didn’t see much wildlife last night. But the ride past Lake Artemesia was stunning — the Canada geese and my favorite fishing great blue heron in silhouette on the still lake with an orange/purple sunset in the distance. One of these days I’m going to get so distracted by the beauty that I’m going to ride right into the Lake. I love bike commuting!

For those of you out there before the sun came up, WOW what a gorgeous sunrise this morning! It was vivid pinks and oranges. Kinda felt like I was watching Dirt’s bike come over the horizon.

Speaking of beautiful things, about 7:15 am or so on Monday 12/5, I’m heading south on the MVT between the Roosevelt and Memorial bridge and on the glass like water of the Potomac is the most amazing cite: a line of ducks, some 30 in a row, swimming in perfect unison southbound on the water. I kept staring as did a jogger and another biker. It was a beautiful thing to behold. I’ve seen three or four ducks like that, but never this many. If anybody got a photo or video, please post.
