Weird kinds of cycling?

When I was at Indian Head this weekend some guy came up to me and asked
“Do you ride ‘__________’s?” (some french sounding word that I believe started with a “c” that I’ve never heard before)

I looked at him puzzled and responded “No, what’s that?”

He said “Oh, your bike looked like it was set up for that” and he just walked away as I asked his back again “What’s that!?”

So it’s bugging me what it is. Did he just make some shit up? Something to do with camping? Skimming through wikipedias hasn’t helped.

My bike is just a regular ol hybrid with discs, fenders and jones loop bars, not even a rack. He didn’t say cyclocross or randonneuring or brevet.

They had a unicycle category at Monster Cross. I thought these people were insane, and turns out, when I saw many of them carrying their bikes at the end of the first lap when I was on my second, I was right.
