You should plan on spending a few hours riding around DC itself. Lots of cool monuments and architecture. Slow going because of cars, lights, peds but it’s a fun way to see the city.

Another option is to do a monument tour at night, which is absolutely gorgeous and uncrowded. Even out-of-town visitors that don’t bike much are much less intimidated to ride in the city after dark because there are hardly any cars around at night nor crowds to fight through. It’s also a lot cooler, which can be a relief during the summer.

I created a GPS route here that you can download if interested. I also added the usual stops I take, peppered with some of my pics (with the exception of the FDR one):

Your problem won’t be finding a ride; it will be choosing among all your options. Hope to meet you while you’re here.

Thanks for the links to these shop rides! You’re right, it’s starting to look like there are too many options, ha! I’ll start doing some more planning and “homework” so when the date is closer I’ll have a better idea and report back ;)

Have you been to Tasmania? Anything you consider a must do whether it’s in or outside of Hobart?

No, unfortunately I haven’t been myself. However, a good friend of mine has done a decent bike packing trip around Tasmania and she blogged her entire journey that you can check it out here: http://www.jullietta.com/cycling/category/tasmania

Sweet! Followed. If you guys chat and Will wants weekend long rides and or weekday training rides, let me know!

Great tip! Thank you. As the conference shouldn’t take up the entire day I’m sure I could convince her to join in on a ride or 2.

Brilliant! Thank you for the GPS route. Added to my list now.

I have also joined BikeArlington’s Strava group as I believe the “Recent Activity” tab will be a great resource for some research :)

There’s def a great cycling community around DC. Chances are you’ll want to do a faster paced ride (based on looking at a few of your Strava activities). If you don’t mind a crit-style pack weekday midday loops around Hains Pt will keep you on your toes – kind of similar to Centennial Park in Sydney except with some stop signs and mixed in with more traffic and in summer, tour buses/coaches :(

http://dcpaceline.weebly.com/ seems fairly up to date, although note Revolution Cycles was bought out by Trek Bikes this year and I’m not sure if those rides are still going ahead.

Your route looks fine, especially if you’re used to riding across Spit Bridge, on Pacific Hwy, etc. in Sydney.

Sat/Sun there are plenty of groups. The Coppi Sunday ride is usually a good pace (with competitive racers) and open to all. http://squadracoppi.com/events/ride/squadra_coppi_sunday_ride

Thursday’s Reston Bike Club (RBC) ride may be up your alley too. You can warm up on the W&OD and then join the A or B group for a good workout. Free to first-time riders I believe.

Bikenetic in Falls Church usually (but not always) does Friday all-day rides but they aren’t fast and are often gravel/MTB.

If you can rent a car and fit your bike, I’d also recommend Skyline Drive out west starting from Front Royal. You can easily spend a day there out and back, with lots of climbing.

    Thanks for the tips vvill!

I’m seriously loving the rides here in DC. Have done two rides so far:

    Thursday: https://www.strava.com/activities/1115686664
    Friday: https://www.strava.com/activities/1117192880

Learnings from the past 2 days:
    – Drivers are pretty friendly compared to the ones we have in Sydney. Everyone has given me a lot of room on the road.
    – It does take 2 to 4 hours to get use to riding on the opposite side of the road
    – Good to map out where you may get water from before you head out for a long ride in 80+f heat.
    – Everyone that I’ve bumped into whilst cycling are always keen for a chat!

Will be looking for a nice recovery ride tomorrow morning, if I can tag along with anyone please let me know!

Come get your bike washed and meet a bunch of us at Emm’s (real world name: Erin) house. People will be there pretty much from 3pm til who knows when. Today (Saturday).

Too late for this morning, but the calendar shows a couple rides you could check out for tomorrow: http://www.freezingsaddles.com. Sadly, no Sunday Bikenetic coffee ride, because Dirt is out of town.

If you are still here Monday, come to pancake club.

    Hi Peter,
That was an awesome surprise when you showed up at Kitty’s bike wash fundraiser at Emm’s house. What a pleasure to meet you.
Now we all have two friends (you & vvill) when we go to Sydney. Safe travels to LA, and be sure to take a ride on Mulholland Drive.
