Spark Speed at Wednesday Night Spins
Weekly Indoor Bike Race Comes to Crystal City in March
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Vornado/Charles E. Smith and Crosshairs Cycling will host an indoor bike race every Wednesday night in the month of March. With the unpredictable weather and a quiet local race calendar, March is the perfect time for an indoor race and provides a warm-up to a racer’s pre-season training program.
“Crystal City is an active and bike-friendly neighborhood,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Wednesday Night Spins is a creative and fun way to experience bike culture while highlighting our incredible parking assets.”
The course will be fast and fun for all abilities, and participants will compete for prizes for the top finishers each week while earning points toward being the best rider of the series. The lounge area will provide great viewing and happy hour drinks in the Washington Wine Academy beer and wine garden. Guests not racing can still enjoy fun games and activities in the lounge area. The first race will debut on March 4, 2015.

ParticipantOf course it’s on a night I have class…

ParticipantI’ll probably watch some of the races, but I doubt I’ll register. I’ve barely ridden at all over the past 4.5 months, and I don’t have a road bike. A triathlon bike wouldn’t be appropriate for a crit-style race and a mountain bike would be far too slow. Plus I would get nervous about being in a crit race. I have looked deep into my soul and realized that I am not a crit road racer.
Maybe I could register for the beginner race and use the MTB or CaBi. Maybe not.

Participantdefinitely gonna check these out. commute home from work, register, race the commuter bike with backpack full of dress clothes? Werd!
these wouldn’t count for BAFS since they’re indoor, right? lulz…

ParticipantIt would be awesome if they were USAC sanctioned, but I assume not. I cant see spending money or risking injury on races that “don’t count”. But I am sure the social scene will be kickin.
As for freezing saddles … Good question! We forbid trainer rides, but this might be a gray area. While inside, it isn’t a heated garage …

Doubtful your GPS device will work.
I’d be inclined to count this, however, if we’re taking a vote.

ParticipantYeah, I would agree they should count. True about the GPS, not sure what those tracks will loom like, but I am sure someone can link to their previous Crystal City garage-race track.

I don’t believe we actually “forbid” trainer rides; we just don’t count them.
I know of some teams that wish trainer rides (because of certain FS teammates who aren’t fond of the cold) were forbidden, though.

ParticipantYes, fair. I meant “don’t count”, not forbid

Pretty sure I’ll spectate at the first one to get an idea of what sort of silliness takes place – definitely not worth putting yourself at risk if the races don’t count toward upgrade.

ParticipantThat hasn’t stopped people before. A few of the people at the Diamond Derby/Phoenix Derby races motor along the course (well, with only a human-powered motor). Do those races count in any standings? I don’t know.
Re the course, it doesn’t sound like this will be a cyclocross course, so it might be a little different from the Phoenix Derby course. But there are limited variations possible in a garage, so it shouldn’t be radically different.

It’s a crit course. All on one level, no hay bales, and lots of turns and zigzags. Prepare for a constant Coast to Zone5 type riding. If you’re doing training intervals, try something along the lines of a tabata–20 seconds on, 20 seconds off.
