ParticipantI’ve noticed the trails are improving but still wouldn’t try it without studs. Fairfax Drive and Court House are completely clear.
1/8th – good to meet you today on the trail. It’s always nice to meet forum folks while out doing what we like to do ; )

Cold tomorrow but in the 40’s Sat and Sunday, so they should clear pretty well.
Sucky wind today.

ParticipantSkreaminquadz—good talking to you and your Surly looked even better in person.
Definitely a tricky ride in spots today.
I’m so glad someone else commented on the wind—thought I was just being a sissy.
Have fun tomorrow everyone!January 14, 2011 at 1:11 pm #924572skreaminquadz

Can’t believe I left that out. Yes, what CCrew says…

Have fun tomorrow everyone! Thanks again 1/8th.
No sissy at all, you get bonus points for being out there on a fixie with no studs!January 19, 2011 at 12:18 pm #924607PrintError
ParticipantFriend of mine tried his studless fixie last week, but two face-first encounters with the ice sheet turned him around. Maybe I’ll convince him to stud it up one of these days.
What are the conditions today? I’m hoping not to need the studs much longer, but tomorrow looks like a 100% chance of studded tires.

It was wet, with some spots, but for the most part a LOT better than I expected today.
Close to 50 degrees today, hoping it dries it out before the cold snap hits.

ParticipantThere were patches of ice on the W&OD in Vienna and Falls Church, but they were soft enough to just ride over. The section east of Lyon Village on the Custis and the ramp down to Teddy Roosevelt Island are still pretty icy.
Great ride in. Glad the rain stoppped right after I left the barn.

ParticipantThanks, had today off. I think I’ll brave the x-bike tomorrow instead of the Beast.
C’mon thaw!

ParticipantThermometer at the office reads 53 degrees. Kinda makes the studs on the mountain bike seem a bit silly.

ParticipantI put studded tires on when the first snow was forecast; they will probably stay on until spring. No doubt it makes it a bit harder to pedal, but my short rides are still easier with studded tires and 20-50 degree temperatures than they were in the summer, with regular tires and 70-100 degree temperatures.

ParticipantCurrently, I am swapping bikes/tires on the weather. MTB + Studded versus CXB + Armadillos. My daily ride is 18mi each way, so I do need to maintain speed where possible.
Over the summer, I’m thinking of picking up a spare set of 700c wheels and a set of 700c studs, then I can rock the CXB all next winter.

Dirt, you just know if you take them off we’ll get an ice storm!

I do the same thing. My studded tires will stay on way longer than most. While it slows me down, I love the bacon sizzlin’ sound while rolling ; )

I almost mentioned that, too! The whirring and crackling is very pleasant, and helps alert pedestrians who are preoccupied with being cold.
