11:58 AM 1/30 (Severe Weather Team) Special Update on Storm Timing. Our multi-state team is seeing evidence severe weather may arrive in the central Maryland region earlier than expected.

Storms moving into Garrett County MD are producing wind gusts of 60 mph, and the line is traveling East at 55 mph.
This has increased our concern for power outages tonight.

    1. We now project wind and rain impacts to start as early as 4 PM in Frederick, Carroll, Howard and Montgomery Counties.

    2. As early as 5 PM in Washington, Baltimore County & Baltimore City, with effects into Anne Arundel and Harford by 6 PM.

    3. Eastern shore counties should see winds increasing toward the PM commute, with heavy rain and strong gusty winds developing between 7 and 8 PM if not sooner.

    4. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has increased Precipitable Water Values to 1.1″ for much of Maryland, hence the reason the NWS expanded the Flash Flood Watch earlier.

I rode DismalScientist style today… no bike gear, just work clothes. I have a rain jacket that I always keep in my pannier but no rain pants. I’m… pretty screwed. The bike might spend the night here tonight.

My two year old is going to get wet. And she’s not going to like it.

Still dry in Foggy Bottom…clouds don’t look rain-y, but they are moving FAST.

Light rain here in Rosslyn and the flags at Lynn and Wilson are straight out. Should be fun for the short wind canyon ride to the trail.

Left about 3:00. Pretty good headwinds all along WOD and Custis, and even stronger headwinds heading SW on Annandale Rd. Rain started pretty strong as soon as I rolled past Graham Rd. didn’t bother putting the rain gear on though. Got home without needing to use a bailout option.

Left the office at 4:10 p.m. Not bad at all except for the headwinds, esp. at Gravelly Point. Just a few drops of rain.

My main issue was being dressed a little more warmly than I would have liked. Oh, that and being very jealous of the people heading in the opposite direction from me!

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center says there is an 80 percent chance it will need to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for this activity for the District and points south. This activity, should it hold together, would impact the region between 8 p.m and midnight.

    Whee!

Pretty delightful at 530pm. Wind really wasn’t an issue on the Custis until about Glebe.

    DAT HEADWIND.

    Also dat crosswind.

I almost blew into the portapotties at Gravelly Point. :P

The wind wore me out – my giant hill climb at the end of my ride was almost 40 seconds slower today than yesterday.

Made it home just before Alexandria issued a tornado warning though!

The downpour started right after I got back from walking the dog. Now my yard is a swamp since it was already saturated with snow melt-off…bleh.

I didn’t realize the snowfall totals were so much higher in East Westover.:p
