I got asked about this yesterday over twitter, so I know the answer:

Don’t worry, they’ll get put back! VDOT is doing latex pavement resurfacing and has to remove all the pavement markings before that happens. I don’t have any timeline details though.

While I am a hopeless vehicular cyclist and, as such, I really don’t care, however, why have the bike lane markings on Washington Blvd been obliterated between Patrick Henry and Harrison streets?

Whoah, I didn’t even notice it on my AM commute….gives you some idea of how poorly my brain functions in the morning.

Been gone for a couple of weeks to a month, about the same time it looks like some cracks were tarred.

So uh…still no bike lanes. Also, is the pavement they put down temporary? Freaking terrible if that’s the final product.

    Here’s what I heard:

VDOT has told us that the bike lanes will be replaced before the end of the season. The pavement seems different because resurfacing was done with a latex paving process. It’s designed to extend the life of a street before a more extensive milling and paving. Washington Blvd is VDOT’s but Arlington does use the same process, you can read more about it here – http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/EnvironmentalServices/dot/StreetSlurry.aspx

Looks like preliminary work is going on to prep for re-painting the bike lanes. White dots to mark the permanent lanes have been put down.
