ParticipantUsed the wonderful day for some Rule 5ness. Custis + Headwinds = Hardening Up. Garmin had it at 64 degrees. Wow!

ParticipantIt didn’t suck. We took advantage of it for sure!

ParticipantI wore a short sleeve jersey, but I had a long sleeve Goretex base layer under it.

ParticipantAbsolutely beautiful. Did my fixie run through the city hitting all the cool stuff, G-town, zoo, mid-stop scone at the Eastern Market. Skidding through the city like an obnoxious teenager at a old man’s pace is one my favorite rides around here and yesterday was built for it.
Btw, way to take the “Billy Goat” literally. ^^^^January 21, 2013 at 5:30 pm #960463Vicegrip
Participantyou guys are killin, me. I spent the entire day doing other stuff.

ParticipantI can confirm that it was a great day to be out on a bike. Me and VVILL summitting SugarLoaf on a 90 mile out and back – check that, Will made it a Century.

You young whippersnappers are making it difficult to keep pace for old fart teammates.

ParticipantThe Queen of the Mark was (is?) volunteering on the Mall, so rather than go myself, I decided to weave the day’s events into a ride. Took the 3A bus to Cherrydale, rode down the Quincy bike lane to Clarendon, and then east to Whitlow’s, where I locked up and had brunch, and watched the inauguration on TV. Waved my bike helmet when climate change was mentioned. After the speech was done, walked around Clarendon (including browsing at Revolution) and then biked to Rosslyn, and took the 3A back.
I hadn’t ridden for about a month, and could feel it but I’m very glad I rode. It was a bit colder then my last ride, but still a good step to real winter riding, I think.

Every so often the DC metropolitan area gets a terrific winter day with balmy weather that teases us with dreams of spring. I hope you had fun today. I had a blast. Didn’t go far, but I didn’t care. January rides in a short sleeved jersey are priceless.
Ok, first off, that jersey is on my covet list (not yours ’cause it won’t come close to fitting me)!
Second, short sleeves, seriously? When I left home yesterday morning at 7:40 with my Smartwool baselayer under my midweight cycling jacket it was 37°. By the time I got home at 3 pm, yes, it was 61°, but I was fighting 30 mph headwinds and getting blown sideways on the 14th St Bridge, and while the wool was damp, I didn’t feel very warm. Ok, I had removed the glove liners and the ear band during the ride, but I was perfectly happy with long sleeves! :p

ParticipantThe wind was strong enough to keep me off a hill that is wide open with no trees and nothing to break the gusts. I hate the feeling of the bike being tilted and pushed with me on it.
I was just working myself half to death and when that happens I sweat like a barnyard animal. But I didn’t last long.
And good god, if the forecast says it’s going to warm up, I roll over, pull up the covers, and go back to sleep. I’m only happy when it’s 90 degrees and 90% humidity.

ParticipantI did my first bike ride this year on Sunday. Good timing. I checked out the Navy Annex. Exterior demolition has finally begun. The western-most wing is almost completely gone now. Most of the Air Force Memorial parking lot has been ripped up.
I also checked out Jones Point Park for the first time since it re-opened. Wow, very impressive!
Sadly, the good weather did not last. A high temperature of 24F tomorrow, with a wind chill of 8F!

ParticipantSunday was nice – but a bit too windy for me (felt like I was going uphill all the way). Now today was truly awesome. Rode into DC at sunrise (stunning) and home at sunset (even stunning-er). Those rides sandwiched a nice short day at work and checking out the inaugural festivities with the Proteus gang. Under 40 but above freezing. Nothing that a nice wool baselayer can’t handle!

ParticipantIt was a little colder today, so we decided to ride underground today.
