Single speed with who knows what chain ring and rear cog set up. Put some studded tires on it for winter commuting (note, each studded tire that size retails for about the same price as the bike!

It’s tempting but even at $200, and regardless of whether the reviews are good, I think it would be a little bit silly in the DC area.

ParticipantFirst unboxing video review?: http://bikejerks.com/blog/2013/03/26/mongoose-beast-video/
$200 is *so* tempting

ParticipantExtremely tempting!

90% of a LOT of fun is still a lot of fun.

Will, why do you torment me?

ParticipantI keep thinking that I have some use for a fat tire bike. Then I remember that I already have four others and one more may be S – 1.

ParticipantWhen I get this (notice the use of the declarative “when” in place of the speculative “if”) there’s no way it’ll be able to stay at home (unless locked up to the bike rack outside). It’ll hopefully find a home at the beach where it’ll have to be ridden clandestinely b/c bikes aren’t allowed on the sand.
Mind-bending question: Can you even be a ‘ninja’ on a electric blue/green/red Fatbike like that?

ParticipantI love that it has a chain guard, but not fenders. Chuckle.

A slow shiny ninja, I guess.
I’m very curious to see what that blogger comes up with in terms of drilling the rims, lightening up the bike, etc.
Maybe we should do a fatbike bikeshare. It’s not the sort of bike I’d ride regularly even if I owned one.

Group bike, to be kept at the house of the cyclist with the most indulgent spouse.

That knocks me out of the running, but Id love to rock this next time we have a snow day, although the review said no folks over six feet.

Of course, we’d all want to use it at the same time.

ParticipantOk, now there is the Walgoose Dolomite, a seven speed with disc brakes priced online at $349.97! It weighs in at 56 pounds and Walmart does not assemble the monster (not necessarily a bad thing
). Right now it shows as out of stock online.
Or you could go with the Framed Minnesota 1.0, nine speed at $699 from the-house.com. Shipping to the DC area looks to be and additional $80. The website says it’s only 35 pounds. Add a second chain ring for the 2.0 version and it’s $899 with a second set of 29×22 wheels.

ParticipantBikesdirect sells disc brake fat bikes starting at $400 for single speed and $450 for multispeed (3×8). All with free shipping. They claim these bikes weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. Probably worth the extra C-note relative to Walmart.

ParticipantNow there’s a fat bike for the kids. 20″ x 4″ tires.

ParticipantThat is pretty cool. I imagine it weighs far more than the kid, but otherwise I could see that being a gentler way to get into mountain biking.
