WABA’s Future Trails event tomorrow

[h=2]Calling all bicyclists, walkers, families, joggers, dog walkers, rollerbladers, trail users and fun-lovers:[/h] Join the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, REI, and trail lovers from around the region for a free and fun celebration of the biking and walking trails that connect our region. The outdoor celebration will feature:

• Free bike repairs by expert REI mechanics
• Free cookies from Captain Cookie & the Milkman foodtruck and free coffee from the Java Cruiser
• Free bike rentals, if you don’t have a bicycle and wish to join us for our trail ride
• Group trail tours by bike of the nearby Met Branch Trail where you can learn about the trail’s history and future (Trail tours will depart at 11:15am, 12:00pm and 1:00pm, will be lead by WABA’s Trail Ranger Coordinator, will last approximately 35 minutes and will be 2-3 miles long so it’s family and beginner bicyclist-friendly.)
• An interactive REI Signature Camp set-up where you can see and test out bike touring and camping gear, as well as ask questions about anything gear or trail related of REI reps
• Raffle prizes for completing the event “Trail Map,” including a spot in one of REI’s C&O Canal Overnight Cycling Tour, some Rails-to-Trails socks and water bottles, and WABA swag.
• A chance to learn from community groups who also love local trails, such as Rails-to-Trails and the Anacostia Watershed Society
• Carnival games and prizes
• A bicycle-themed photo booth
• Facepainting by Arte by Charlotte
• Arts and crafts for kids of all ages

Our Future Trails celebration event will take place Saturday, November 15th from 11am to 2:00pm and it’s a party for the whole family. The event is rain or shine, and if the weather’s gloomy, don’t worry, we’ve got a huge covered tent to keep you warm and dry.

This was a nice event and well-attended despite the chill. Great to see LordoftheMark and some FCC and other friends there too. WABA is spearheading a collaborative effort to try to bring greater connectivity to our trails, funded in part by a very generous grant from our own local REI stores. (Please thank them if you have a chance – my understanding is that they gave 3x what was requested.) Lots of folks were there to provide information about all of our area trails, including representatives of Rails to Trails and WABA Ambassadors and Trail Rangers. Among other things, WABA shared a new concept plan for an Arlington Boulevard Bike and Ped Corridor from DC to the City of Fairfax. Tours were provided of a couple of miles of the Met Branch Trail showing, among other things, the new ramp being built and the recently opened bike coop (Gearing Up) just adjacent to the trail. I also heard a rumor that new DC bike maps may be coming out within the next few months. Aside from all the great info, we enjoyed having a tent, hot cocoa and warm cookies to offset the chill, as well as REI mechanics working nonstop on a long long of bikes doing adjustments, lubes and checkups. Many thanks to all who are working to improve our trail network and who helped with this event!

You heard correctly. I think someone finally got tired of waiting for the mayoral election to find out whose picture was going to go on the back and just printed the blesséd things already, mayorfacefree.

I did like the suggestion of penciling in new infrastructure and CaBi stations on the old map just to get a picture of how much things have changed, though.

Very nice festive well attended event. First time my wife and I did a group ride together – and, after some complaints about the difficulty of shifting getting up the ramp onto the MBT (assuaged by the info that its just like driving a stick shift) her main complaint was that the ride was not long enough

I learned a lot about the MBT, and the concepts for the Rte 50 trail.

1)Was it all the local REI stores? I’d happily thank the folks in Tysons Corner REI next time I go, if they were involved.
2) is there more info on the WABA page about this bike/ped corridor?

The hard copy of the concept plan shows this URL for a map waba.org/arlingtonblvdmap

But I see no links to anything about the plan from their website. I presume their website will be updated soon?
