I’ll make a quick attempt at a recap. I didn’t take a count, but I would guess that about 20-25 people showed up, most of whom identified themselves as Arlington to DC commuters. Among those attending were Chris and Tim from BikeArlington, several BAC members, and a representative of VDOT. The purpose of the meeting was to collect views on what should be sought or developed for the short term, medium term and long term in five areas – engineering, encouragement, education and a couple of other E things. We were invited to list concerns/priorities we each had on big sheets of paper taped to the walls. Although few of the ideas seemed very new, people had a lot of them covering a lot of ground. Things mentioned included addressing the issue of the crosswalk on the GW Parkway, Lee Highway issues, better education for police, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians (esp tourists), improved signage, more regional coordination/advocacy, better bike parking facilities at metro stations/apts/businesses, shower only rates at gyms, more bike lanes, sharrows, trail connectors, etc. I’m sure others who attended can share more of all the many thoughts discussed. WABA is holding several local meetings like this one, and is inviting all interested to attend a regional meeting to be held in Arlington on Nov 3′ at which the ideas will be consolidated. Shane Farthing of WABA said that there would be several good speakers there and encourages all to come.
