    Here we go:

Jan 26: My old Kona rigid MTB rolling on 26er studded tires to explore possible bike-friendly exits from my neighborhood. There were none.

Jan 27: Rode to work anyway which entailed three rather long periods of portage and some unpleasant co-existence with large metal death machines along Montrose and Old Georgetown Roads. Volagi Ti running Conti Top Contact winter tires.

Bikeshare is a wonderful invention. My 2.4 mile spin was a nice break from the drudgery of the office. I only wish someone would make a portable coffee holder that you could attach. Riding the CABI through the already bad DC roads made worse by ice, snow and slush was a challenge.

Took a Surly Instigator 2.0 for several laps inside the shop while we were dead today (PLEASE, will SOMEBODY come visit us bikeshopminions?). Unfortunately, the building we’re in doesn’t get reception or GPS signals of any kind, so my Strava track never started.

    So much for that idea.

Made the…ahem… unwise* decision to ride my road bike (2006 Orbea Onix) to work this morning. Sure, it’s been part of countless crashes and 5 broken bones and a torn kidney, but NOT TODAY. The afternoon was actually pretty nice!

Aaaaaaand… Indoor riding does not count. 😎

Trainer rides and stationary bikes do not count. Underground rides count as long as you have an accurate odometer.

Does that mean that underground rides count towards vvill’s prize, but not BAFS total points/mileage?

I was under the assumption that underground rides did count for BAFS (at least this year), which is why I let them count for this prize.

But it’s pretty tough to get 2.0 miles inside a LBS anyway I imagine.

I assumed that the “inside the shop” was in a parking garage attached to the shop, because MY FRAME OF REFERENCE ONLY! Also, maybe Brünø was making a joke.

so yeah, i guess i agree that riding inside a shop on the showroom floor doesn’t count.

    the rules say:

    3) Trainer rides don’t count. Mark your rides as such or include #NOBAFS in the title to exclude them. Take your bike outside and ride it some distance across the surface of the earth in order to earn points.

I would assume that a parking garage would count, but only if it’s cold and exposed to the elements? I dunno. My parking garage at work is a subterranean toasty 65 degrees with two doors to the elements that are always kept closed, and I would feel guilty posting up a ride and claiming points.

I would however totally count a ride in the parking garage at WFC metro, since it’s open on all walls, and it might be a convenient place to ride without worrying too much about ice/snow buildup.

You should get the points just for the mind- and ass-numbing drudgery of riding circles in a cold parking garage.

I just assumed Brünø had a LOT of time on his hands!

Ok, if it matters (I suspect not), for the purposes of this Prize: I will accept 2.0+ mile rides that aren’t GPS tracked as long as you have a photo showing the odometer reading (in addition to other requirements). I will update my original post too.

Oh how I have missed going anything over 10 mph and riding anything that weighs less than 30 lbs! The Viaje felt down right zippy today as Pete and I rode a few recon laps around Navy Federal. The 45North Xerxes in the 120 TPI are amazingly light You almost forget you are on studs — right up until you need them! Spendy? Yes. Worth i t? Absolutely!

2008 Kona Major Jake with Nokian Hakkeplitta A10 700 x 32 72 Studs. Definitely not enough for the goddamn MVT which remains ungoddamnplowed. This bike and tires (which are really “studs-lite”) are happiest in fresh powder. When I went out at 12:05am last Saturday it was pure awesomeness. I just ordered some 45NRTH 700x38s which I think will be a little more hearty.
