Should it please the chair, I would like to offer a friendly amendment.
In Arlington, as a part of Vision Zero, all roads that are found to have car traffic >= 30 mph must have a sidewalk on at least one side of the road, and safe routes to get to the sidewalk from the other side of the road.

It’s a great idea. I can only think of one that doesn’t meet this — Glebe Road near Chain Bridge.
Are there others? There aren’t many roads with speed limits >= 30, so shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

ParticipantSorry, what I really meant to say was:
If it please, I offer a friendly amendment:
Arlington should adopt Vision Zero.
You know, because we haven’t. 😡

ParticipantADOPTING Vision Zero is easy – DC did it! But actually implementing policies that get us moving in the general direction is REALLY REALLY HARD. I mean, I assume it is, I can’t say for sure because I don’t think DC has actually tried. We have a lot of Twitter hashtags, though

Vision Zero in DC is a joke. Headline today- man in wheelchair in SE DC hit and killed by a motorist. How many people have to die for DC to make Vision Zero anything besides political posturing?

Having been through the process in Alexandria, its really not THAT easy. But its true that follow up is needed, not just a plan on a shelf.

ParticipantThe reality is that drivers have had it their way for so long that any change that might inconvenience them is met with howls of protest. And its hard to make everyone else safer without inconveniencing drivers in some way.

True, but adopting is one step in a hard process. Working with a County that won’t even hold meetings on how we can possibly adopt it… that’s even harder.

I’m a minority voice in not supporting Arlington adopting a Vision Zero plan because I don’t see anyone in the executive that would serve as a champion to ensure that it’s implemented, especially since a proper plan involves the coordination and cooperation of multiple agencies.

Hillary Orr came back to Alex T&ES as Deputy Director, in December 2017 (she does things other than VZ, but I think she also is the point person for VZ?) That is when the City adopted VZ. I guess when VZ was being discussed T&ES was talking to Hillary about the position?
Another thing the City has that is positive is that the new chief of police, who came in January 2017, is a strong supporter of VZ.

ParticipantDid anyone see any signs of the enforcement blitz that was reported as starting today in DC?
I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary this morning.

ParticipantI cannot tell you how relieved I am that there will be no more pedestrian and cyclist deaths in DC now.

For the event itself: as always, lots of the right things were said by the mayor, DDOT, DPW, and DCPD – so we’ll have to wait to see if the actions match. I did like that the DPW director was there; from what I’ve seen, he’s been rather absent from a lot of these types of events (for all of their faults, DDOT at least shows up). It was somewhat “interesting” that they staged things so that the mayor and DPW Bike Force were blocking the curb cut for the intersection…

…not that it mattered with traffic not caring about blocking it either.

They also had a few photo ops of installing “No Turn on Red” signs for the cars travelling from 1st to Mass Ave NE. However, nobody stuck around long enough to enforce it, so there’s that.
