ParticipantNo need to convince me. You’re preaching to the converted!
Set Up Events also has a Maryland Triathlon Series, including a very tough sprint tri at nearby National Harbor. (The organizers do not recommend the Battle of the Potomac triathlon for beginners.) Members of the DC Triathlon Club receive a discount to a Set Up race each year, I believe. So that’s a good reason to join DC Tri if you’re interested in triathlons.

Rev3 has a growing line-up of events, including some in the Mid-Atlantic, such as the tough Half Full Triathlon near Columbia, MD (October), and Rev3 Williamsburg (June). Beginners should consider starting off with a sprint distance, although Olympic distance could be a reasonable option for experienced riders as soon as next summer.
Some races offer aquabike options, where you would only swim and bike. Some people don’t like running. Others find that their legs don’t hold up well to a lot of running. Aquabike and team relays offer cyclists a chance to participate in multisport events even if they aren’t proficient in swimming and/or running. Not all races offer aquabike or relay options, so check the official sites.
The Washington DC Triathlon is sadly no more. But the Nation’s Triathlon will return next September. (I don’t have high hopes that the National Harbor 70.3 race will be rescheduled. That’s not a beginner-friendly distance anyway.)
Another “local” race is the Columbia Triathlon, another tough race in Columbia MD (May). TriColumbia has other races in Maryland, from sprint up to Ironman distance.

Now is the time to consider gearing up for a triathlon.
Stop laughing.Can’t. Stop. Laughing — this is a brilliant post. Must catch my breath.
My family — who already think I’m nuts as a slow triathlete — now think I’m extra nuts as I repeatedly burst into unexplained laughter. This alone:

It’s a good thing I was not drinking when I read this. acc, what a cheerfully warped perspective!
Other selected highlights:

2. Is your collection of swim caps wearing thin? This is a good way to replenish your supply. One free cap with every entry.Don’t forget tech-tees. No need to buy tech-tees when you get a free one with each entry!
Being serious for all of twelve seconds: the Setup Events team runs a great series of races that are friendly for beginners and experienced folks. I’m never going to be a podium threat, so a supportively competitive atmosphere is great from my perspective; you’ll find that at these races. They’re also pretty inexpensive as triathlons go. I can’t recommend them highly enough.
Now please forgive me while I chuckle maniacally in the background just remembering acc’s post…
