Got to play with my new toy today!

The trail through Vienna and Dunn Loring was predictably choppy. It was my first time attempting such terrain on the studded tires and all went well:

This is what it looked like in Dunn Loring:

The bridges and overpasses were either snowy, slushy or icy:

As previously mentioned, the Brandymore Castle hill was a technical section. Even with studded tires, pick your gear carefully because once you get going, there is no bailout option. I saw a pedestrian really struggling in tennis shoes.

Overall, the commute was very manageable on the studded tires and I had so much fun. A big improvement over last year, when I could only go through when passable by road bike. It didn’t take too much longer than usual.

Yeah, I’m glad I had the studded tires on this morning. Otherwise, I would have been making snow angels on the trail.

    Nice job!

I guess I need to get some snow tires. I’m new to this and I did my McLean – DC commute on the Bontrager All-Weather tires with which my bike came (Trek 7.3). Only two spots were really hairy – the downhill right after East Falls Church metro and the bridge over Spout Run right after Lyon Village. Lots of braking but still better than sitting in traffic.

    Welcome Subby!

I’m impressed you did it without studded tires! They definitely help and you’ll find a lot of folks on this forum willing to help you get started.

Thank you for posting the pictures, that helped inform me a lot. You’re one tough broad. ;) And I mean that in the nicest way.

Yep, it was super icy on the overpasses on the Mt. Vernon Trail near the airport – had to walk across both – they were sheets of ice. I have slicks on my bike still, so staying in the saddle was no option. Should be easy on the way home, thankfully!
