    Velomobiles are recumbent bikes or trikes with an aerodynamic shell that allows much higher cruising speeds and protection from the elements (though summer heat can be an issue in the ones that are completely enclosed with insufficient ventilation). Many also have full suspension, lights, turn signals, special rain protection, etc.

    They are arriving in DC today, I’m going to go out and see them pass by on the W&OD in Arlington after I get out of a 3pm meeting.

    The realtime link seems to be used occasionally, as they haven’t always been able to recharge at campgrounds and are conserving their battery.

    They are now (approximately) in Vienna, heading to the Custis Trail. Here’s a better GPS link:

    I was out for a big ride today and happened to cross paths with these guys. I passed most of them heading south toward Purcellville from Brunswick, MD and then I leapfrogged with a few of them on the W&OD on my way back east.

    All in all I saw about 8. They would cruise on the flats and downhills but seemed to have trouble on some of the hills. They drew a lot of curious looks and while I didn’t get a picture, some of them had awesome designs.

    I was on 4 Mile Run at Ohio St having just finishing my commute yesterday evening about 6 pm when I saw three or four through the trees on the W&OD heading east.

    These things are super cool and super geeky. I love them. They’re CRAZY expensive…. even by my standards. They are still a lot of fun though.

    Saw them on the W und OD on the way home. Sure they are crazy impractical, not-entirely-trail friendly, and terrifying to ride in a city, but I’ll take seven.

    Does anyone know if the velos did the switchback on the Custis? Just curious.

    I don’t know if they did, but they’re easily capable of it. That is one of the funnest sections on my recumbent trike. It is cool when you can get it up on 2 wheels and have both of them slowly drifting toward certain death in the form of those lovely log guard rails. :D

    Here’s a video of ROAM riders passing through Leesburg, along with the picture below of them on the W&OD just east of Leesburg;

    Last night, the ROAM riders celebrated at the EU Delegation downtown, along with the EU Delegation Ambassador João Vale de Almeida.
