ParticipantUm, would a heavy-duty traffic cone parked dead square in the middle of the space help?
I certainly would leave a polite note asking the driver to choose another space because it’s hard to get my bike in and out without scratching his vehicle.
Or markings on the space, a giant X, to indicate it is not a parking space. In the larger scheme of things, this isn’t worth going to war over. Save that for when the driver bumps your back tire or pushes you off the shoulder.

The particular facility I work in is not very large. The only people out here are some facilities people, engineers who support the servers (I’m one of those) and some administrative folks. There are a few thousand servers, so there’s enough people here that I don’t know every one, but just about everyone. I’m the only one who bikes out here, so that bike rack hasn’t been used for probably a few years. People have grown accustomed to using that space to park their precious vehicles away from everyone so they don’t get scratched up. The funny thing is, the paint on this particular vehicle is peeling in a few spots on the roof…. so it’s not really that nice in the first place. No one has ever cared about people parking there until I started work out here. For whatever reason, THIS person hogged the entire spot, sometimes people will share it if the parking fills up (which it does occasionally). This person was just blatant about it, which was irritating. I don’t bike every day, but I bike enough that people have seen my bike out there a few days every week. The guards made the driver move the car, so they definitely got the message. It isn’t worth going to war over, especially since the building is small enough that I’ll see the person often. I’m trying to “share” too, it’s a huge spot and I’m the only cyclist, and not even every day. Maybe others will join me as they learn about the distance I cover and as I gush about how much I love cycling to work.

I find it odd that whoever owns the property would stick a bike rack there to begin with. Can’t they stick it on the sidewalk or near the front door like most businesses do? Seems silly to use up an entire parking space for a bike rack in a lot like that.
If you’re sure you are the only one using the rack, perhaps you could park your bike the long way on the back side of the rack?

If there were no open parking spots, sure. As you can see from the pics, there are plenty of open and marked spots. There’s no need for the car to be in the bike parking.
edit: and yeah, meant to add that I would LOVE to see this rack near the front. It’s at the FAR end of the parking lot (which really isn’t that big). If it wasn’t for the way the planter is on one side, I’d think it was an after thought, but this definitely was “engineered” in to the initial plans. I guess it’s not up front because the building is mostly glass walls (which is really cool) and they thought a bike rack was ugly or something

ParticipantCool building. Could you start parking you bike to a lamp post until they wise up and put some bike parking under that convenient awning, on that wonderfully unused sidewalk…

ParticipantAesthetically, I’d hate to see a bike rack in front of this building. Of couse, I’d also hate to see a parking lot in front of it.

Cynical me assumes that’s an old picture and it now has jersey walls or at least a lot of bollards.

Finland looks good, but after watching Troll Hunter a few weeks ago, Norway gets my vote. Some of the riding along the fjord roads must be tremendous

I’d say integrated hanging bike racks on those metal jut-outs. Have a nice little pulley system for people to hoist their bikes up.

Actually, no. It’s well gated and guarded, but no huge ugly bollards, stone barriers, or jersey walls. But, seriously, it’s the Census Bureau. Other than when they walk up to your front door or call your home incessantly, who hates the Census Bureau?
