Perhaps I’m missing something here but I rode through here a week ago and I thought it did exactly what it was supposed to do: separate and slow traffic through this intersection. I had no trouble navigating it and didn’t find it awkward or troublesome. You shouldn’t be flying through there in either direction as (1) it’s a blind intersection; and (2) it’s within the park and adjacent to areas where children and families are gathering. I think this is much ado about nothing. But I suppose only time will tell.

I first came through in the dark of night, and the island [emoji907] wasn’t very visible. I wasn’t “flying” but found it quite hazardous. But now I know that it is there! My comment was simply to point out that with data via incident reports, time will tell if that intersection is really “safer” or not. And thanks for giving a hoot!

This is doubtful, because it is rare that bike-on-bike crashes are reported even less so on off-road trails. Or single-bike crashes for that matter.
For instance, government data says that the trollheim is pretty safe, since there are hardly any officially recorded crashes there. And even in the case of injuries, hospitals and police do not sync up their data.December 26, 2020 at 10:22 pm #1107348Judd

The only collection of crash data on the MVT that I’m aware of was done by a public health student who collected data by contacting jurisdictions and gathering reports of dispatched medical units.
I’ve crashed three times in the MVT, all three of which resulted in injury but not an official report.

ParticipantWell then I guess that we will never know if indeed this spot is “safer” then, in the absence of data (instead of opinion)?

Correct. There are no baseline data for comparison even if some sort of system were created to collect data moving forward.

ParticipantI live 600 feet away from this circle and love the improvement! It is a much more context sensitive solution to the problem here than VDOT’s original plan to re-align the trail, which was going to necessitate the removal of way too many mature trees in the park.
