I thought you worked at the FAA. If you have a CAC card for ID, it should work for entry for Fort Meyer.

I find Walter Reed comfortable in that area. If the hill is the problem, you can still use WR to cross the Pike.

I have a federal ID, your standard PIV card, not a CAC since we do not fall under DoD. From the press release that is insufficient; perhaps unofficially it is. I’m gonna try it anyway to see if I can get across the Fort (perhaps being a girl helps???).

The press release is unclear as to the impact of the new new policy on non-dod – feds. I was in the visitor control center today and was told by fort myer police that those with piv cards will still be allowed access at all gates. So you should be fine.

A lot of the sidewalk along the Pike is open again, so if you end up not being allowed through, you should be ok riding on the sidewalk for the few blocks to get from Orme to Courthouse

Oh, and to your other question, Barton does have a ramp but it’s sucky. Better would be to take the sidewalk along the Pike one block East, then go into the Penrose Square development and cut through the parking garage access to get to Adams.

Actually, I have no idea what either CAC or PIV means. My ID has always worked at the Southgate.

According to Wikipedia, a CAC card is used by the military. I believe a PIV card is the domain of non-military agencies; they look very similar though. I’ve always used my PIV card at all the gates too but haven’t tried since the new policy went into effect. If I feel like biking locally this weekend I’ll give it a shot.

Fingers crossed to your first point.

As to your second point; yeah, there are workarounds but it’s hard to accept after experiencing the glory of riding worry free thru the base. Kinda like visiting the Netherlands then coming back to the US. Sigh.

There is a ramp down Cleveland, but it is awful. Instead, you should take the ramp from Adams St that goes under Penrose Square. It will take you to Barton where you can cross Columbia Pike at the light.

My Dept of Commerce Badge and my wife’s Dept of Labor badges have both worked fine.

One note, cutting through the Army Navy CC in not permitted. I do now after recognizing their agronomist, we met back in a grad school soil physics class in 1999.

PIV is the identity standard for logical & physical access required for all federal employees/contractors. CAC is DOD’s implementation of PIV (which began before the PIV standard was issued). Most agencies have a named program for their PIV implementation, but since they’re smaller than DOD nobody outside the agency (and not everyone inside the agency) has heard of those names.

+1 on Walter Reed through this area; it’s a nice ride overall. I’ve always felt comfortable riding in the sharrows south of the Pike. The only place that’s a little uncomfortable is north of the Pike up to 8th St S. There are door-zone bike lanes (rideable if you hang on the left edge), but also concrete medians that don’t offer passing vehicles a whole lot of room to get by. But it’s a very short stretch, and WR doesn’t carry that much traffic anyway, so I can usually time it to go through that narrowest part without any motor vehicles around.

I think the part between 8th and Columbia Pike would be better if the lines were painted a little different. Specifically, the vehicle lanes could be narrowed from 11 to 10 feet, and also shifted to the left. (There’s more space than necessary between the yellow line and the median.) That way the bike lanes could be widened enough that riders could stay entirely inside them while safely clear of the doors.

Why would you want to avoid Walter Reed? Non-members might not be “allowed” to ride through ANCC but I haven’t been stopped the few times I did it.

Crisis averted for now! I rode thru Ft Myer today using my standard issue (non-DoD) federal identity card (PIV). Just like always. Yay!!!!!!

I also noticed for the first time that there is a four foot stone wall separating the base and the cemetery but no barbed wire or anything at all to stop someone from just hopping over the wall. I didn’t see any cameras either. This is obviously not a high risk base given how easy it would be for someone to enter the base from the cemetery.
