USBR 1 public input extended thru Wed. – please take the survey, & share!

Fellow Cyclists,

I just got a note from VDOT’s Cindy Englehart, PE, telling us that the public input for USBR 1 through northern Virginia has been extended through tomorrow. Please help choose the best route options by taking this survey, and submitting any comments you might have:

Northern VA cyclists will be most familiar with these routes, but many others around the state will be too. Everyone please submit your comments, and get others to do the same. Share this through your mailing lists and social media.

Again, the deadline has been extended through tomorrow, Wed. Apr. 30.

Update from the discussion BPAC meeting: discussion of US Bike Route 1 with Cindy Engelhart (VDOT) and others that attended the meeting. Special thanks to Cindy for attending our meeting and engaging us in this discussion.

1. Our members with experience using signed U.S Bicycle Routes emphasized the following:

a. Users of U.S Bike Routes are typically on long distance trips and will not likely know the area. Keep it simple.

b. In Alexandria, Adventure Cycling, and other tourist-type riding is on the Mount Vernon Trail and Union Street. Why should US Bike Route be any different than that?

2. Other Discussion:

a. The City’s Waterfront Plan recommends that bicycle traffic be encouraged to move away from Union street. In this context, the USBR 1 traffic is a very, very small fraction of our bike traffic. We can meet the Waterfront Plan objectives by developing Royal street as a Bike Boulevard; commuters and others who are looking for the fastest way through town can be directed to that route, independent of US Bike Route 1’s location.

b. BPAC members are engaging Business associations this week and next and will continue to gather inputs from all.

3. VDOT’s Comment period closes on Monday, 16 December. All are encouraged to use the Virtual Meeting on line to make their inputs, on any section of USBR 1 for which they have an input.http://www.virginiadot.org/programs/united_states_bicycle_route_1_and_76_in_virginia.asp

The virtual meeting allows you to view possible route alternatives and submit comments on specific segments of the corridor.

4. BPAC will continue to solicit comments with a goal of formulating a BPAC position on this topic and submitting that before 16 December.
