I’m pretty sure Fredericksburg exists, I went there once.

So I’m looking at the official cycling map of Virginia, and there’s mentions of US Bike Route 1, but I’m having a hard time finding a proper map, or information that it actually exists. I’m thinking riding down to Fredericksburg next weekend, but I don’t know if it even exists.
If anyone could point me to a proper map, that would be fantastic.
Have a great ride, I’m sure the maps cyclo posted will help.
I hope it was just a bad experience that I had, but I would avoid the Route 1 section near Mt. Vernon between the Mt. Vernon Highway, and Lorton Rd. It’s horrible. Highway speed traffic, and a road condition that BLOWS.

ParticipantBest way past that section is to go through Fort Belvoir. You need to show id at the gate.
Enter at Walker Gate, about a half mile before the Mount Vernon Hwy hits US 1. You can either exit at Tulley Gate or Kingman. If the former, continue across US 1 to Braddock to FFX CTY Parkway. Right turn to Telegraph. LT to US 1. Then pick up the map’s route.

ParticipantI think it’s more of a made-up designation of Rt 1 as a bike route. I cross it every day going home and each time I pause for a good 5-10 seconds AFTER I get the light because someone runs the red at 50mph about every third time.

So it is possible to bike across Fort Belvoir as a civilian with just showing ID. Sweet!

According to Ft Belvoir’s website, you need DoD ID to use Walker Gate. Is that not so?
I’ve gone onto Ft Belvoir, but never by bike, though I did buy my current bike (frame) from a man living on base housing there.

ParticipantI should keep this in my car as a backup route when 95 is a clusterf&*@ on summer and holiday weekends. I occasionally bail to Route 1, but even that is bad sometimes.

ParticipantIn a couple of months a new route will open. Continue on the MV highway to US 1. Go straight onto Mulligan Road which will go all the way to Telegraph. Left on Telegraph all the way to US 1

I imagine that the Telegraph bike lane will extend to it from the west, leaving a new way to go from Mount Vernon to the Franconia-Springfield area. I am excited to try the new route when it is finished!

The rules seem to be kind of inconsistent. I go through Tully gate regularly for work and whenever I forget my CAC Card, the Driver’s License works just fine. Not sure about other gates.

Unless POTUS is playing golf, they have always been fine with just a DL (I don’t even have a CAC card since I’m not in anything government-related). Very friendly at the gates too.

Good to know. Thanks!

I’ve biked Mulligan Rd already (on the weekend when there’s no construction going on) and it’s sweet.

ParticipantI would love it if there was a nice bikeable route to Fredericksburg. I’ve researched US Bike Route 1 before (unsuccessfully) so it’s good to hear that some progress is being made!

ParticipantAfter unsuccessfully trying to access Mulligan Road from Telegraph, I checked out the construction page and found out that it is set to open in mid-August: http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/telegraph_and_mulligan_roads.asp
Of course, I wish I had checked that BEFORE going :p
