I wonder if anyone makes a cycling sarong?
If no one does, we should. Just buy them in bulk from overseas, and put a new tag on them that says “cycling sarong” and charge 60% more.

If you know your Simpsons Lore you’ll remember that Bart had to match the socks.

ParticipantSorry for chiming in late – i was a little busy yesterday.
So as vvill noted, I’ve been using the Swrve knickers (and jeans, and caps) for years now. I love me some Swrve gear. Its pricey compared to many other options, but the build quality is very good (bonus: all the Blk label swrve gear is sewn in LA). Right now, I have a pair of their cotton trim fit knickers – which I”ll have to replace soon-ish because I’ve started to wear a hole through the rear fabric. Also a pair of the lightweight wwr knickers for rainy days. I’m tempted to get a pair of the denim knickers too…eventually. Don’t just take my word for it – Cycleboredom is also a fan of swrve gear.
I don’t think they have knickers…but I really like the look of some of the Vulpine gear
Here’s a DIY solution from Bike Jerks: http://bikejerks.com/blog/2012/10/17/diy-knickers/
TwinSix also has just added some 3/4 knickers to the mix – I don’t know much about them, but I’ve had good luck with Twin6 gear otherwise.

If Dirt were here, he’d tell you, “It’s hard for me to give clothing advice because I’m not human-sized, but Brand X makes some great knickers that I once used to ride a fixie mountain bike triple century and then they caught on fire but Brand X sent me a new pair for free and in fact I’m wearing them right now. Too bad they don’t come in pink” Then he’d edit the post and put something random in the comment box.

ParticipantNot knickers, but inexpensive for riding around town.

Anyone been to the local stores and know if they carry the bike stuff? At a eighth of the price of Outlier I’m willing to give these a shot.

I was wondering that too. The store locator doesn’t have a filter for the Brick Lane collection. My google-fu found this review. Seems like he is in Brooklyn, so my optimistic side says we can find them here.

ParticipantI’m pretty sure DismalScientist has H&M beat by several years on the cycling in khakis thing.

ParticipantIf you’re just looking for bike-ish khakis, you could try the Columbia Commuter Pant. I’ve found them for less than this price. I have three pairs.
HOWEVER.
There is one small caveat that I have had the occasional problem with, how to put this politely. . . Oh, wait, no one is polite here. Anyway, I have had occasional problems with crotch friction. I won’t elaborate, and I can’t say for sure that it was the pants and not anything else. But it was somewhat uncomfortable.
But they’re great pants, and the back pockets are large enough to carry a small u-lock or a bottle of wine. Yes, I’ve carried a bottle of wine on CaBi to a party in the back pocket of these pants. What did you expect me to do, show up empty handed with some excuse about how I biked there?

Note to self…. U-Lock + Bottle of Wine = Crotch Friction

ParticipantHow can you go wrong with a description like this? “For increased airflow and mobility on the trail. Soft, seamless conical waist with an integrated belt.” …
Or a name like Elkommando?http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Men%27s-Elkommando%E2%84%A2-Kilt/OM3417,default,pd.html

You’d probably need a compact frame to pull those off. A straight top tube would probably cause problems.

The actual “Flying Scotsman”… the bibs do ruin the effect though!

ParticipantThat’s a mini-kilt.

ParticipantI’ve always had good luck with Arc’teryx stuff. It is a little more expensive than most, but the stuff lasts forever. REI made a set of knickers that I like for ages, they may still make them. I bought my first pair 6 years ago. I bought a set of the Arc’teryx ones at the same time. I’ve gone through 4 sets of the REI knickers, but I’m still on the first set of Arc’teryx.

I’ve got a pair of these too, which are close to knickers… basically at the knee, VS below the knee: http://www.arcteryx.com/product.aspx?gender=mens&model=Spotter-Long&language=EN
I can’t find REI’s knickers in their current catalog. They were great, but lacked durability. They carry stuff from PrAna and Zoic too. I’ve got both of those and like them a lot. They are not super durable though. The cloth pills after a year or two of use.
Most of these are NOT specifically designed for cycling. They’ll have a seam through the crotch. I wear them for casual riding around town with bib shorts underneath and that seems to alleviate any discomfort.
I think I mentioned them in a previous post, but Club Ride Apparel makes some great stuff. http://www.clubrideapparel.com/collections/mens-knickers I’ve got a bunch of their jerseys.
