Or join me on the long way around, MVT to 4MRT/W&OD. Come on, it only adds another six miles or so.
I love taking that route when I have the time. Except when it’s flooded (and the smell).

ParticipantThere was a truck parked on the W&OD hill just up from the Weenie Beenie this morning with a bunch of “Bike Trail Closed Ahead” signs in the back – perhaps a brief closure is coming today relating to resurfacing they’re doing on Walter Reed?

Or he was very lost.

ParticipantSeems like they did a decent job with the detour. It was well marked and fairly bike friendly. Going east, it diverted to Monroe north to Lee Hwy, then crossing Lee at the 66 off ramp. I’m not sure how the westbound detour was routed though, but I saw lots of cyclists riding up the spiral behind Lyon Village, so they must’ve been diverted to 20th St.

Participantnice smooth paving job, although there is a bit of a height difference where the new pavement starts at the bottom of the hill eastbound near 18th St. It kinda weirded me out not to have to ride in the oncoming lane to avoid bumps as I approached the bridge over Lee Highway.

ParticipantThe repaved section was very nice and smo…..oooth. They done a good job. I felt like riding a Cadillac.

ParticipantAre they done paving on the Custis?

ParticipantNo idea, but I just saw a “bike detour” sign on the downhill of EB Custis b/n Kenmore and Spout Run. The arrow pointed bikes up the ramp onto WB 66.
Seriously, ARL County, you need to get new bike detour contractors.

No, not the whole Custis trail. They repaved only from 18th street to S curve.

ParticipantReston: thanks for the info. How much more are they going to do? I hope they get the nasty stretch about a half mile west of there where roots have caused ripples in the pavement. On Wednesday, I watched the work and it seemed like they were doing much more than just laying asphalt down; if true, that would be good news.

Another update:
“The Custis Trail will be closed for a probable 3 days starting 6/19/12 between the Lyon Village Shopping Center and Cherry Valley Park (near Quincy St) for the purpose of repaving.”

Hi, does anybody have an update on the paving situation? I’m planning to ride this evening for the first time all week, and I need to know how long I need to plan for.
Thanks to our daily riders!June 22, 2012 at 2:29 pm #943873TwoWheelsDC

Thanks to our daily riders!I rode through about 6pm last night and the work appeared to be finished (no signs/equipment to be seen). The only thing I imagine they might come back for is striping, if that’s even part of the project.

ParticipantThe newly paved segment made for sweet riding yesterday evening. I just REALLY hope they also fix the nasty area near Washington Blvd. Blind corners on a hill with bumps a couple of inches high is an accident waiting to happen.

ParticipantThanks, TwoWheelsDC!
