ParticipantIt was open when I rolled through at around 8am. That would be great if they are keeping it open for rush hour.

ParticipantIt was closed at noon on Saturday, but open at noon on Sunday.

ParticipantLooks like everything is closed today, except maybe the bars and restaurants. Fed. gov’t, all area school systems closed. Clarendon Mardi Gras/St. Patrick’s Day parade canceled.

ParticipantThanks to the folks on here who have been in touch with the contractor, and have helped get the detour signed and safety issues sorted out (reflectors on gates) etc. Very much appreciated.
I was concerned that travelling East on 4MR and wanting to get on Mount Vernon Trail traveling South I would be out of luck if I was pulling the bike trailer with the kids as I’d have to negotiate the zig zag switchbacks or take a long detour…. but… this weekend I successfully came down the zig zag switchbacks on my Surly Cross check towing a double wide chariot bike trailer. I took it slowly round the bends with my feet down but it is doable! Other longer bike combos might not work but my combo did. Take it wide with the bike in the bends and that allows enough room for the trailer to follow.
Just wanted to let others know it was possible. What I did notice was that at the bottom where you join the 4MR trail the sight lines are poor. I had to lean over the bike to make sure I could see if the trail was clear. It’d be a good idea to give people some room at that entrance when riding on 4MR.

ParticipantAny guesses as to whether FMR might be open around 5:15 pm this afternoon? Trying to decide which route to take. If in doubt, I’ll leave it out.

ParticipantThanks for the reminder, I’ll cut over at Crystal City.

ParticipantJust as an FYI to others, I’ve rolled the dice and gone through here a little after 6 PM the last couple nights, and it’s been open. Of course, past performance is no guarantee of future results…

ParticipantI got a chance to try the switchbacks this morning with my seven foot long trailer. They are tight! I had to stop and scootch my back wheel to the outside to get the trailer around the bends but I was able to remain astride my bike. The detour was short and well marked east bound.

ParticipantThe trail was open when I came through this morning around 8:05 am – a happy surprise; but closed when I got there at 7:05 pm tonight, which I was not expecting at all.
What time this morning were you there, Rod? It looks like you used the route suggested in the first post in this thread. I’m not sure why I haven’t tried this yet. It might be easier than the Crystal City routes we’ve all been discussing.

ParticipantAround 9:30.
Yes I think its the same route posted on the first page of this thread. I just followed signs. Easy. The switchbacks are tighter than any others I’ve ridden. I wouldn’t laugh at any who choose to unclip or put a foot down. I assume most do not stay clipped in. The racer dude I was following unclipped. I think I could do it clipped in if I didn’t have the trailer. These switchbacks are passable, not a deal breaker, totally rideable with whatever degree of caution you wish to use. I love riding tight switchbacks but I know I’m different that way.

ParticipantOn second though, going up would obviously be harder. Make sure you’re in a small gear so you can get going again or just walk the whole thing. When riders are going both ways and need to pass might be interesting…

ParticipantTo be honest, I’ll probably just walk my bike up and down the switchback and leave the fun tight turns to others. It clearly wasn’t designed for biking, although I totally get why a lot of people I know might have fun trying to do it on a bike. On second thought, maybe I should say “a few” people I know . . .

Rockford10 and I rode that way last Saturday: she decided to walk up, but I rode. Those turns are very tight, but doable slowly in a low gear; I didn’t have to put a foot down. The following detour was clearly marked westbound, and seemed short and easy.
