Starting December 2nd and running for approximately 6 months, a short section of the Four Mile Run trail in Potomac Yard near the junction with the Mt. Vernon Trail will be closed during most commuting hours due to demolition of a bridge overhead.
A detour will be provided, but many riders may find it better to pick an alternate route to avoid the construction area altogether.
The detour – designed for ADA compliance, not necessarily bicycles – diverts traffic off of the trail onto the Jeff Davis Hwy west side sidewalk and also at the new switchback ramps to cross US1 at the S. Glebe Road signal. For those who are game, the switchback does incorporate a flight of stairs with bike rails built in.
The trail will be closed from 5am to 7pm Monday thru. Friday; and 8:30am to 6:30pm Saturdays. For the most up to date information, trail users are encouraged to check http://www.novaregion.org The demolition project is being managed by the Potomac Yard Development LLC. The path under the bridges was open as of yesterday evening.

But watch out for late model sedans bearing Maryland plates.

I’ve been impressed how accommodating the demo managers have been keeping the trail open as long has they have. In the bad old days it would have been closed months ago.

    finally closed @ 3:30pm today

They did a nice job putting up warning cones before you arrived at the zig-zag detour. The closure looked permanent to me.

Thanks for the warning! This will be important for almost anyone coming to the final BAFS Happy Hour by bicycle.

It was open and I rode right through around 5:30 pm! I couldn’t even tell that it had been closed. It was open this morning as well. I have noticed the cones that have been staged there recently.

Hopefully they’ll close it only as needed. I’m glad to hear that the closure was well marked. Thanks for the heads up.

Glad I decided to ride the Custis home yesterday. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe an excuse to continue down to Slaters Lane and back through Potomac Yards to make up for a shorter wind assisted commute this morning.

If anyone riding home tonight (or any afternoon/night) discovers that the FMR trail has been re-opened, as it was yesterday, it would be much appreciated if that info could be posted here (asap) for subsequent riders.

Last night it was open when I went through around 5:30 pm.

Evening of 3/13: FMR was open when I rolled through at 6:55 p.m.

Morning of 3/13: I was also told by FFG that he was the second to the last rider through at 7:25 a.m.

(This morning (3/14), I didn’t get to the area until after 7:30 am and just decided to take Eads/18th without checking to see if FMR was closed.)
