Received an email yesterday advising that the current expectation is that the closure will begin “around Jan. 23.” I’ll post if I hear anything further.
At which point they’ll send out another email advising the closure will begin “around January 30”, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum. I think someone must just really like looking at the cranes and construction equipment sitting on that bridge, so he/she keeps delaying the project so he/she can see them going by on Rte. 1…
In all seriousness, though, thanks for the update.

No, closure will not happen until we start having average daytime highs in the 60s so that the closures will disrupt the maximum number of trail users. Sigh. I tell you, I could really stand some closure on this project (and the Columbia Pike/4MR intersection project).

ParticipantThey were installing sheet piling yesterday around the first two spans to come down so some progress is occurring. While it would have been nice to take the over the trail span first, that wouldn’t have allowed the crane to get access to the other two spans. The substation to the south pretty much limits access to the north side.
Took this one last night on my ride home just past the work site. This is the reason we like riding the FMR trail. Not up to my normal standards (long exposure braced on the railing) but still makes the point

ParticipantHere is a note from the Pulte manager. Pulte is the “owner” for this project.
“Currently, we are scheduled to begin the intermittent closures around January 23. Sometime around April 1, the trail will be closed around the clock for about 2 months. We expect to be completely finished in early June. This is behind our original schedule because of some contractor issues we had in November and December but those have been straightened out and we are getting back on track.”
Hopefully the Eads Street sewer work will be done in time.

ParticipantI’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, thank god for Potomac Avenue! (applies to my commute from Del Ray, at least)

ParticipantMaybe they could repave that whole stretch under the bridges as a peace offering for &^*%ing up our commute for 3 months.

Sorry, there doesn’t seem to be an “I told you so” button.

ParticipantHere is a note from the Pulte manager. Pulte is the “owner” for this project.
“I understand the temporary closures during working hours began last week. These are planned to go thru the 3rd week of March depending on weather. At that time when we move to demo the last bridge span the concrete abutment along the north side adjacent to the trail then the trail will be closed full time for April and May. We plan on having the trail back open by mid June.”
I have seen detour signs at both ends and some reflective gear on the gates. If you will be affected by this project, recommend you scope out alternatives. Recommend FMR to Eads to 18th to the Crystal City Connector

ParticipantInteresting. I rode through there this morning a little after 8am and it was still open. If they are going to keep it open early AM for the next month that would be kinda nice!

Yes – the bridge demolition has begun. They were making LOUD NOISES last night and this morning.
