Underneath all of the concrete is the bike path.

ParticipantWell, that’s one set of non-working lights they won’t have to worry about anymore.

ParticipantThink of all the new possibilities for horribly designed zig zag trail connections and stairs for bikes!

So I guess that section’s getting repaved then.

I think part or all of Eads St. is scheduled to be repaved this year. Along with the repaving, the bike lanes are supposed to be extended north of 23rd St.
On a different note, I was wondering if anyone had heard any updates on the proposed Four Mile Run Pedestrian-Cyclist Bridge. There was a design contest back in 2009 for a bridge that would connect Eads St. and Commonwealth Ave. in Alexandria, or curve above FMR near those streets. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission website doesn’t have any updates since about 2010.
In regard to Eads, the most recent plans I’ve seen involve using Eads as a demonstration cycle track project. Measuring a bunch of stuff about the street, then putting in a cycle track, then measuring afterward to gather data that can be used to support cycle track decision-making going forward. Eads is scheduled to be repaved this summer between 15th St and 20th St. I don’t know the timeline on much else.
The bridge design is going forward, but I don’t believe any money has been identified for construction. I think it’s a worthwhile project; Arlington is looking to move forward with a corridor-long cycle track on Eads; Alexandria’s best non-trail bike infrastructure is currently on Commonwealth Ave; let’s connect them together with something better than the Route 1 bridge sidewalk. Right now, though, I’d rather see the money put toward cycle tracks on arterials. I think that’ll make a much bigger difference in getting butts on bikes.

I’m not sure that’s a safe assumption.

Dirt will include it in an upcoming gravel grinder ride.

Do you know if anyone is leading a B2WD convoy up (or down) the Lombard ziz zag?

This raises an interesting question…since two way traffic on the Lonbard Zigzag is problematic even when traffic is light! I’ve never taken the stairs, and I don’t wish to start now, but if there is a convoy of riders coming the other direction, it’s likely to be a long wait. I think I’ll take Eads on B2WD.

Does anyone know if the trail has, in fact, reopened?
