Sounds like I should look for a 24″ unicycle then. In the mornings when I commute by Metro, I walk about 2 1/2 blocks to the office after getting off the Metro. Too short for bicycling, but when there’s ice on the sidewalks and roads, it might be just enough for a 24″ unicycle with studded tire.

The distance sounds about right, though I don’t know about riding a unicycle on ice/snow. I am sure people do it, but it might be a fairly advanced skill (akin to muni). The thing that throws me, primarily are things like curb cuts, ruts etc. Having a larger wheel would probably help there, but having to adjust balance and power on rough terrain is quite tricky! That said, it gets easier every time I go out there, so probably just getting comfortable.

Power to you, though. No doubt with some commitment you will be sailing along over ice ruts come winter.

Whew! Made it to Pancake Club and back this morning: 2.3 miles each way. This was my first actual ride to go somewhere, and it was my longest ride by a lot. So I was a bit nervous that it would all go okay. It’s close enough, though, that even in a worse case, I could just walk.

I was apprehensive about the road crossings, because the bumps at the curb cuts sometimes bump me off. My free mounting is not consistent enough to make me not care that I have to hop off. I prefer to keep going if at all possible. Traffic was light, so I was able to cross at every one along the W&OD (Lee Hwy, Little Falls, Great Falls, Oak St.) without dismounting. I did come off and have to remount about 5-6 times going out–mostly before I got to the trail.

The ride back was much easier. I think that’s because it’s just slightly downhill eastbound through Falls Church, so less work.

I’d love to relay how fast (slow) I was going, but I lost my Garmin out of my pocket. :(

Strava or it didn’t happen. Sorry you lost your Garmin, that would have been a very impressive ride. :(

I can vouch for the ride back – I passed him near EFC.

It might be a while before we’re ready to start our football league.
