ParticipantNow I’ve got the idea of getting a unicycle with a studded tire for winter fun. If I fall, I’ll just land on snow.

How typical, that any idea I have is not an original:

ParticipantI don’t know if I’d commute 12 miles on a unicycle, but I’d probably try it if my commute was only 2 miles like this guy. He got his unicycle at age 10 – I think I was around that age when I was dreaming of getting a unicycle, even though I didn’t even know how to ride a bike.

ParticipantPlenty of whack jobs did Monster Cross on unicycles last year. They looked absolutely beat by the end, both mentally and physically. I have to imagine each inch is a grueling chess move. Power to ’em. I think my longest was three seconds before tipping. I should try it drunk, maybe they would negate each other,,,, or at least hurt less.

Can’t say I understand the entire commercial, but …
I got it loud and clear.

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I saw a guy on a penny-farthing today on the WOD near Purcellville and I have no idea where else to post about it.
I have nothing to add except he was really moving and I’m really curious how he gets started or stopped….his feet were about the same height as my noggin when he went by.

ParticipantSaw this (well, something a lot like this) on the MVT this evening:

As a geek, I liked seeing that, but I think the electric motor and self-balancing design would take a lot of the fun out of unicycling, not to mention not allowing me to build the super leg strength to compete in UCI or something (j/k).

How is the stress different physically from regular cycling? There’s probably a lot more core activation because you have to keep your balance. Anything else?
What about equipment? I saw some of the big box store models online. I don’t know if I would ride one enough to require a more heavy-duty model/brand.
You might want to have a chat with Ben at Proteus (and yes, they stock unicycles). Brevets, CX, MoCo Epic, Kinetic Sculpture—yeah, he’s done all that and more on a unicycle.

ParticipantSomeone say penny farthing? Found this 36 inch wheel number on craigslist. Just small enough that the kids can ride it and big enough that I can too. My 11 year old Dear Daughter hopped on and was all smiles from the first ride on. Once I got used to it I found that I could tear around on it CX style. Over curbs and rough surfaces and the like. Tons of fun and now I am looking for a true high wheel in the 48 to 50 inch wheel size.

ParticipantWhile I question the applicability to this thread
this is a great tangent.
The 36″ wheelsize is popular for touring on the unicycles. I think I will build a 29″, though, given the availability of rims — not to mention tires. I might someday build a Schlumpf 2-speed wheel, though I will need to be pretty committed since that is a $1k hub!

ParticipantPerhaps the moderators can spilt the penny farthing / high wheel posts off into anther thread?
Not that a highwheel thread has any Arlington comuter value .
The folks that make this modern version of a high wheel, Coker, are strong in the unicycle world. They also make a standard bike that uses the 36 inch wheel. Looks normal until you stand next to it.

ParticipantAh, yeah; I was just kidding about the topic. No need to split it out. There isn’t enough interest for a unicycle-only thread; we should just rename it unicycles, penny farthings, and other weird cycles.
Yeah, I think Coker may have pioneered the 36″ unicycle? Or at least is one of the most prominent. Now you can get other brands in that size too.
What I will probably do is get a KH 36″ frame and just start off with a 29″ wheel (and disc brake) in the frame. Eventually build a 36″ wheel (I guess I wouldn’t get to use my truing stand, but could probably use a unicycle frame upside down in the work stand).
