I didn’t really choose any specific deductibles when I got my insurance through Geico, I’ll share what I have and the cost (per car):

    Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury
    Current Limit: $100,000/$300,000
    $18.20

    Uninsured Motorist Property Damage
    Current Limit: $50,000
    Current Deductible: $250 Ded.
    $2.90

It’s the same price across all my vehicles/drivers. I pay 6 months of coverage in 4 monthly payments, so that’s about $80 per car for 6 months of coverage. Seems worth it to me.

The truck in question is a new-looking SVT Lightning, which isn’t exactly a cheap car. So I would bet the driver has assets to go after, insurance or not. I’m quite certain the couple will have no trouble finding a lawyer to help them out.

Hopefully they make a full recovery. The commenter on ArlNow who witnessed the accident said the driver peeled out from the intersection and fishtailed out of control before crossing the median and striking the two cyclists. Unfortunately easy to do with a high-HP rear wheel drive car like the Lightning if you drive like an idiot.

SVT Lightning was discontinued in 2004, probably not worth that much now.

Being the sister of the injured woman, the family thanks you for all of your kind words of encouragement. The woman cyclist is still on life support as of today and we have high hopes. Her husband is still hospitalized with broken ribs and punctured lungs. We are taking each day as it comes, understanding this is going to be a long journey. Now every evening in my prayers I thank God for bike helmets. Never thought of that as a blessing before, but I do now. Again, thank you for your well wishes!

Please keep us updated, when possible (I can’t imagine how hectic life must be right now), on their condition. I know we’re all keeping them in our thoughts and hope for a speedy and full recovery. If the family needs anything, please let us know as well, I’m sure there are many of us that would be willing to help.

Kindness5, I’m so glad that you found this forum. I don’t think anyone here would dispute me if I tell you that we all have had your sister and her husband, and you and your entire family in our hearts and and thoughts. If love, caring and hope for successful recoveries can cross cyberspace, please know that you have it from this group.

Your family is often in my thoughts and I hope the very best for them both. I travel through that area often and it is with heartfelt intentions that I wish them well.
