That looks like the kind of sensible passage that VDOT won’t permit under the fairfax county parkway!

To be fair, this design wouldn’t come close to passing muster with current design standards. I’m of the opinion that a crappy connection is better than none though.

I’d also add that this tunnel has a rather scary and unpleasant history. I’m going to learn more details on Friday.

I love that path (and especially that crappy connection and tunnel – who *doesn’t* like riding through water?!).

But just upstream from there, I’ve encountered one of the ugliest things I’ve seen on a trail. Some jackhole tied a chain, at thigh level, across a bridge on the path. It’s a poorly lit trail, so could have been really bad, had someone hit it. Took me a good 20 minutes to get it undone (half expecting that I’d have to use it on the person that did it in the first place).

That is the Holmes Run Trail between Alexandria and Lake Barcroft in Annandale.

Definitely check it out on a long ride, Bob. Plans are underway to ruin the whole thing, so you’ll want to see it in the “Before” phase.
