ParticipantNot to worry, DDOT has plans to talk about possibly adding some paint somewhere to calm traffic on that block by 2022. Now we just have to wait through 37 public meetings where the same 11 NIMBYs will screech about parking, and then DDOT will scrap the plans. Everyone wins!

ParticipantI’m guessing less than a year in jail for the driver and they’ll be back behind the wheel within 24 months.

ParticipantI was a bit upset when I went through here yesterday morning and saw the aftermath (they were hosing down the street then) and then heard the Secret Service guys in Lafayette discussing what happened. Riding by today, it’s like the car absolutely wiped out a good portion of the park. Entire trees (saplings, but still) are gone. It’s as if the driver was so trashed he drove through the park thinking it was the road.
It’s a little park that some of the homeless sometimes use. I still start feeling like tearing up a little thinking about it.

ParticipantIt’s an incredibly despicable act. This park is half a block from my office. Hell it’s one block from where my kids use to go daycare and they played in this park all the time. This wasn’t a case where someone lost control and jump a curve. The benches that were hit were on the other side of the park from Penn. The driver shot into the park run over trees and then took out two benches. He had to be really moving. I’m not sure any amount of traffic calming solves this sort of problem where you’ve either got someone incredibly malicious or incredibly drunk or both and they have access to a vehicle.

ParticipantI attended the community vigil organized by @handlebarsDC…a very somber affair. Apparently the driver of the vehicle was headed west on Pennsylvania Ave NW at the intersection of 20th Street, crossed the double yellow line, 2 lanes of oncoming traffic, jumped a street curb, and then a second curb around the elevated park, took out 3 trees, flipped, and landed on 2 guys hanging out on a park bench across from Captain Cookie & the Milk Man

https://goo.gl/maps/jrRurJecsan2NYvT9The vehicular murder is being investigated by the US Park Police since it was their Park, but no details have been released yet (sigh:-/).
