ParticipantI’m partial to old (steel) Trek mountain bikes with rigid forks – 820, 930, 950.

ParticipantI find Craigslist pricing odd. There seems to be big discount for mountain bikes. Old ten speed prices don’t seem to correlate with quality well. People seem to think they can get $250 for some crappy model with steel wheels, stem shifters and suicide levels. Yet, quality “ten speeds” don’t go for much more.
I still have the Bianchi mountain bike available (and all the others) from this thread: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?2337-Wife-has-ordered-me-to-thin-out-the-collection

ParticipantI’ve got a Trek 4300 that I leave locked up at the Pentagram City and Crystal City stops all the time. So far no problems but I do use the Kryptonie Fahgettaboudit Chain.

ParticipantOh, I forgot to mention that I’m 6’3 and that it seems that most bikes are built for the vertically challenged.

No, no they are not (I’m 5’1″).
They are built for the boringly average. :p
(though I digress from the main point of your question. sorry. please return to your regularly scheduled bicycle purchase recommendations)

ParticipantPhoenix Bikes comes to DC for you!
I just saw that Phoenix is having a used bike sale event in DC tomorrow (Sept.
at the Big Bear Cafe, 1700 First Street NW, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. See their website at http://www.phoenixbikes.org for more info and a phone number.
The ad on their website says that they’re bringing road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers, hybrids and single speeds.

ParticipantThere is a guy at the Arlington courthouse farmers market that sells used bikes I think its is on Saturdays. The first Saturday of every month is a flee market on the parking garage over 66, near Washington & Lee. Sometimes there are bikes there. Velocity Bikes in Del Ray, Alexandria. Yard sales.

ParticipantThe guys at the outdoor market in Courthouse now have a permanent used bike shop at Washington Blvd. and Pershing Drive. There have been a couple stories about it, on ARLnow and The WashCycle. The sign simply reads “Bicycles” but I think there’s an actual name for the store.
EDIT- The name is simply The Old Bike Shop.
