There was a tree across the Mount Vernon Trail today between the 14th Street bridges and the airport. I noticed a few other major portions of trees along the trail had come down. One was a big limb south of Old Town. Another was the top portion of a tree along the river. If you were on the business end of one of these, you’d be in a world of hurt.

Does excess heat cause weak trees to split and break off?

Probably coincidental. I’ve never seen or heard of trees coming down due to heat. Heavy rain and/or strong wind, or the weight of snow and ice. That’s about it. If anything it would prevent it since branches are more flexible when warm. They snap easier when cold.

Someone named “Rootchopper” is asking this question? I detect a wee bit of misdirection . . .

Uh, Mark, he mentions the “top portion of a tree” and a “big limb,” not the roots.
