Upon turning south to head toward the airport I was appalled to find people parking partly on the MVT trail because their cars couldn’t fit entirely on the narrow strip of grass.
Serious question, because I really want to know – is there something magical about Gravelly Point that makes people do stupid stuff like this?

Because it is the closest parking lot to DC without actually having to drive into DC?

I somehow don’t think the slothlike creatures I’ve seen at Gravelly Point are going to walk from there to DC.

ParticipantI saw a few cars parked on the path on Sunday. When I cycled past Gravelly Point today, I noticed one of the electric signs had the message “No Parking on Grass”.

ParticipantThe parking lot at Gravelly Point was open this morning, but the one at Roosevelt Island was still closed. There was a NPS SUV parked in front of the barriers, so maybe they just need to get the equipment there to remove the plastic jersey barriers.
What’s the news on the CCT and C&O?

I did 5 laps of Gravely Point Criteruium this morning, and it was empty until the 5th lap when that black SUV showed up.

Our warm showers guest says Feds took the pump handles off the well pumps on the C&O, and made attempts to lock the porta potties. He rode from DC to Whites Ferry yesterday, and said a number of other touring cyclists were pretty unhappy.

There’s an item in today’s Wash Post (John Kelly’s column) about this. NPS says the portapotties would have been a threat to public health since nobody would have been cleaning them out, and the wells require regular monitoring for water quality to assure they are safe to drink, and nobody monitored them during the shutdown, so the handles were removed to protect the public from unsafe drinking water.

I don’t understand your post. Are you saying you don’t believe NPS?

Yes, that sounds about right. I can’t even imagine what the porta-johns would have been like after 3 weeks, especially if people were getting giardia infections because the iodine levels weren’t kept up. It sucks for the people affected, but NPS did the right thing (unlike congress).

ParticipantI don’t mind them padlocking the portapotties, but taking off the pump handles is ridiculous. The CDC recommends testing well water quality only once per year. http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking/private/wells/testing.html
This and many other actions by the NPS suggest to me that someone ordered the NPS to maximize the pain.

The NPS’ statement said the state of Maryland requires testing of the wells every two weeks.
