Fun times yesterday at Hains Point. You can sort of see a would-be tri-stud coming towards me.
Should be working on his cyclocross instead.

ParticipantMadison and Jefferson closed to cars, and gaps have been left in the barriers for cyclists. Win! I even made the light at 4th!
Except for the idiot driver who decided to turn the wrong way onto Jefferson this morning (no barriers on that end). Dumb.

HP is closed indeed. All the bathrooms are locked and the water is shut off. The golf course has been converted to a Park Police vehicle parking lot. They’re closed down for the long haul.
I’ve seen conflicting reports about how “closed” HP is in terms of just getting through on Ohio Drive. One person posted that it was closed at the East side, but not the West, but a photo in this thread appears to show the gate closed on the West side. Someone else posted a photo on facebook just showing orange cones on the East side. Who’s been out there? What’s it really like. I don’t need the bathrooms. I just want to ride.

Ohio Drive by the Lincoln has barriers up that are easy to slip through. The “point” of Hains Point is gated by the golf course entrance and on the Potomac side. You can hop the curb at either location. I hear the bathrooms are locked and there is some random trash on the road that looks like it’s spilled out of garbage cans there that wasn’t cleaned up as of this morning.

ParticipantThese urban National Parks get trashed every day, but they aren’t getting cleaned up every day. Don’t use the trash cans. Carry your Clif Bar wrappers, etc. out.

Didn’t you get the memo? Government doesn’t do anything, so it doesn’t matter if it shuts down.

Agreed. Lots of trash around East and West Potomac parks. I’m hoping there’s some sort of skeleton maintenance crew, but it may get to the point were some volunteers go down with trash bags and clean up.

ParticipantAlthough somewhat obvious, but i was hoping, Fort Hunt is locked tight, so no speedy loops. Just as well, I haven’t been very speedy lately.

Maybe a WABA delegation could do a little volunteer work…

Just remember if you are a furloughed Fed, it’s illegal to volunteer without pay! Oh wait a minute, that’s the guidance about doing your regular job.

ParticipantI’ve been off the bike since the shutdown started for various reasons, but I’m hopping back on this week…has anyone been having any trouble with park police while taking the Capital Crescent Trail? (I’m going from Bethesda down to the Georgetown Trail head) Do you think I’ll have any enforcement problems if I use the trail?

ParticipantNot the CCT, but I biked right past a NPP car on Jefferson this morning, and didn’t have a problem. They have brought the gates along Jefferson and Madison together, making it harder to bike through. Bah humbug!
Did anyone else notice that the TR parking lot was full of cars on Saturday, and the gates we just pushed aside? Then on Sunday, the more substantial barriers blocked the parking lot? Interesting.

I noticed the full parking lot, but by the time we rolled through the barriers were back in place at the entrance and an NPD officer was driving out. Someone must have moved them early in the morning and it took awhile for NPS to notice.

ParticipantOn Sunday I rolled through Gravelly Pt and was dismayed to find a ton of cars parked on the grass along the Parkway because the parking lot was blocked. Upon turning south to head toward the airport I was appalled to find people parking partly on the MVT trail because their cars couldn’t fit entirely on the narrow strip of grass. I called NPS police to report the cars on the trail.
And drivers talk about cyclists being scofflaws?!

Yup. I also saw some officers talking with a girl who was on the wrong side of the closed gate on the pedestrian bridge heading across to the island. She must’ve wanted some raspberries.
