ParticipantHave you checked out Yakima and Thule? They are the big names I think of first when talking about gear carriers on a car. Might be hard to find a single only bike carrier. I’ve only seen as few as two on most options.

Participant+1 Thule. Have a 4 bike hitch rack on the minivan that has been very solid. Also good for deterring tailgaters

double +1. I have the Helium (http://www.thule.com/en-US/US/Products/Bike-Carriers/Hitch/971XT-Helium), and I leave it on all the time. Keeps people from bumping my car when I’m parked on the street.
It also flips out of the way to access the hatch (I have a Honda Fit).

ParticipantPublic service announcement – if you live in an area with crowded on-street parking please take the rack off the hitch when you’re not using it. There’s one on my block that has a Tahoe with a huge hitch rack and drives me insane. I’ve left notes on the car asking him to remove it nicely and it’s still there. I never actually see the guy so I haven’t had a chance to talk with him yet…

Participant1up make some great hitch racks. They also happen to be manufactured in the US.

This does annoy the piss out of me. I have a Honda Fit, and when I leave the rack on, my car is still shorter than most (and I don’t usually park on the street), but if you’re driving something that big, you need to be courteous.

I’ve noticed these at a couple of races and I’ve been pretty impressed. They look much more solid than most of the ones I’ve seen from the big brands.

It’s not even just the size of it. When you bump someone normally, and everyone does, you’re hitting the bumper. Thanks to that guy and anyone else who leaves their hitch ball on as well, you’re now going to put a hole in my plastic bumper, or maybe if I’m lucky (and I have been thus far) just fold my front license plate in half.

My mom accidentally hit the gas while parking once, and hit the car in front of her. It would have been minor, or even no, damage if the car in front hadn’t had a hitch rack. The rack bent into the back window. Rack and window both ruined.

ParticipantWe have a Saris Porter 2 bike rack. It works well. Able to angle it back to open the hatch on the Xterra, and the ability to put down the arms. Quite solid.

+1 on the Saris racks. I have the Bones 3, and like how we can still access the trunk (small sedan) by turning the support leg pads inward rather than down. (It’s still plenty strong and stable.)

I have the same rack (2-bike instead of 3) and like the opposite about it – with the pads down pressing on the bumper the rack is much more stable, even when I’ve got it loaded up with two heavy bikes. I have complete confidence that it’s not going to go bouncing off down the freeway.
