I’m not a morning person. I thought to myself “must get counted – must leave the house before 9am”. What I failed to realize is that leaving the house at 8:55am doesn’t put me at a counting location until after 9am…

Oh well. Beautiful morning regardless. Thanks for counting, county friends.

The counter by the automatic counter on the MVT near the airport was wearing a Bike Arlington jersey! I passed 10 counting stations on my extended commute in this morning. Unfortunately, I could not get counted by the nice lady on Lee Highway between Lynn and Ft Myer because I was on the wrong side of the road for her. :( I should have gotten counted by the counter on the Wilson/Ft Myer overpass by the Rosslyn Metro because I turned onto the sidewalk in front of him to get to the newspaper boxes. Why did they remove them from the south side of the overpass? Guess it’s because there is so much more pedestrian traffic over there, which is why the counter is also over there.

I saw a couple of counters on the MVT now that I think about it (including the woman in the BikeArlington jersey) but I didn’t know either of them.

I plan to wear my BikeArlington jersey when I count on Four Mile Run near 395 mid-day Saturday. I know that’s a busy time on the trails, but I hope some forum friends will roll by and say hi!

To those of you who passed through the Custis/Ballston Connector intersection this morning, thanks for stopping by or waving! I was wearing a Bike Arlington jersey, but it was covered with my yellow wind breaker for most of the shift.

I counted 365 cyclists through there in my two hour shift. I think most of them were commuters, based on amount of gear (I realize some people commute without panniers or backpack, but most of the people through this morning did have them).

I have one more shift on Saturday, not in Arlington, but back out at Gallows and the W&OD in Fairfax County. I will be there from noon to 2. So, weekend warriors, come say hi and remind me to take a photo.

I got about 300 cyclists/peds at the Crystal City cutoff (between the MVT and the CC Waterpark). A number of peds were using the trail to get to work (probably at DCA). It was interesting to see the mix because I normally clear that point a bit after 6 when the trail is much quieter.

I’m covering the same spot today 4-6pm. Wave as you pass or come say hi.

I got counted at Custis/Ballston connector, Courthouse and TR Island. I guess I didn’t get counted on the Custis between Lynn and Ft. Myer since I take Lynn north with a right turn on Custis/MVT to get to TR Island.
I did see consularrider there and we exchanged pleasantries.

Like Dasgeh this morning, I was thinking, “Must get counted – must leave office early.” So I rushed out of the office much earlier than usual, hopped on my bike, rode as fast as I could and managed to get past all four counting stations on my way home by 5:50 p.m., but alas, no one appeared to be counting on the Four Mile Run Trail. Oh well – the automatic counter will show I was there. I got some good exercise this evening!

Saw Zanna at the Crystal City cutoff this afternoon.

I got counted at about three stations this afternoon, Crystal City cutoff, MVT at DCA and the W&OD-Custis intersection.

I’m pretty sure I saw a woman counting Four Mile Run at the Eads St intersection between the Water Treatment Plant and the Route 1 bridge.

I was expecting the counter to be at the shaded rest area there so I might have missed seeing her.

I rode up to the Crystal City connector in the early evening. Someone was taking notes but it wasn’t Zanna.

I hadn’t seen this thread, so I figured the man in the reflective vest was doing one of two things: counting cyclists/pedestrians, or enforcing the LAW on the trails. I didn’t know which one, so I decided to be on my best behavior and ride absolutely straight along the path at my usual safe speed. (I was on a CaBi bike so even if I wanted to speed on the trail, I couldn’t. Even on my own bikes, I no longer ride as fast as I can on bike trails, after my tumble a few years ago on the CCT.)

Glad to be part of the trail count numbers. It was my first ride on the MVT since last weekend.

I was on the MVT near the airport south parking lot from 4-6 pm Thursday. Here are my totals:

    Pedestrians
    Men-north: 32
    Men-south: 36
    Women-north: 9
    Women-south: 14

    Bicyclists

    Men-north-wearing helmets: 93
    Men-north-no helmet: 20
    Men-south-wearing helmets: 277 (!)
    Men-south-no helmet: 41

    Women-north-wearing helmets: 20
    Women-north-no helmet: 4
    Women-south-wearing helmets: 69
    Women-south-no helmet: 2

    Uncertain gender-north: 5
    Uncertain gender-south: 4

    Nice showing, men-heading south-wearing helmets!
Ladies, our numbers are terrible! Let’s get out there more.

Yeah, women were way underrepresented at my counting location, too. I am doing a stint on the W&OD for FABB tomorrow; I hope more women come out on the weekend.

I understand Nelle Pierson of WABA is at the Women’s Cycling Summit in Long Beach this week, making a presentation on a proposal to increase ridership among women in our area.

My counting assignment on Wilson by the Rosslyn Metro was almost exclusively pedestrians, almost 2000 of them. Only could count 18 with bikes, only one of whom was a woman. Saw almost three times that many (and probably double the number of pedestrians), but they weren’t crossing my imaginary line. Luckily I did not have to keep track of the gender of my pedestrians, there were times where I was having trouble making the tick marks fast enough. ;)
