I was playing with the data from the trail counters the other day and decided to look at the Arlington County trail counter on the MVT near the DCA South Parking.

But what does it all mean? What’s the significance?

Here are the counts from the 14th Street Bridge ramp for Sunday and Monday. The vertical axis shows the number of cyclists in a 15 minute time span.

Their were 4702 cyclists on Sunday and 3305 on Monday. This is a bit unusual as the weekday total often exceeds the weekend.

I would guess except at times like peak Cherry Blossom bloom 75 and sunny days, 4th of July on weekends, etc.

The value could be expressed as a cost equation if we found a round with comparable annual traffic and how much they spent to maintain it. We demand equal funding! ha, I kid myself, I know.

I would love to do this analysis. I have a feeling that we could demand 1/10 the amount of per driver funding and still come out ahead. I’m getting very concerned with the state of the Custis — apparently the substructure is failing, creating the moguls, which are growing at an increasing rate. If we don’t get some maintenance scheduled, I worry it will become unusable…

What might be helpful would be for some advocacy group to total the repair costs/estimates for the regional trails which have been degraded by vehicle traffic (FFX county parkway trail is notorious for this) and have a number in hand to start discussions with the elected officials and the various agencies that currently view the trails as a free shortcut. The real issue is enforcement and/or cost recovery–each individual offender can argue that it was someone else that caused the damage. Maybe in aggregate the top-level officials will start to understand that there’s an actual problem and start looking for solutions.

I’ll look at the data again in a couple of weeks.
