In September of every year Arlington County fields a team of volunteers to take a snapshot of bicycle and pedestrian transportation activity in the County. The observations we make complement data collected by a network of 24/7 automatic equipment. But volunteers in the field can see things the equipment cannot, such as the gender of trail users, and the proportion of cyclists wearing helmets. Volunteers get to observe cycling and walking as they have never seen them before!!

We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 13th, from 7-9 am, and / or from 4-6 pm; and / or on Saturday, September 15th, from 12-2 pm. To sign up, or for more information, you can email County Planner David Patton at: dpatton@arlingtonva.us

Here are the locations that need counting:

    Shared Use Paths:
-W&OD trail at East Falls Church (just W of Lee Hwy and Ffx Dr)
-Custis Trail below Patrick Henry Dr (near intersection with W&OD)

-Crystal City Connector (near National Airport)
-Mount Vernon Trail (mainline trail near economy parking lot — South airport)

What happens if the volunteer turnout is so high that all of the people who would normally be riding the trails are sitting trailside counting…no one?

If that happens there will be cupcakes.

Email sent…for some reason I read the date as TOMORROW (Aug 16) and was going to suggest a whole bunch of us staff up the 4MR locations before heading over to Cap City.

Email sent, just waiting for confirmation of assignment. If I get my requested assignment, do I count myself since it is on my way to/from work and I would be commuting by bike anyway?

Email sent. Glad to be able to help out with this. I believe accuracy requires that I count myself too!

It would seem there should be cupcakes regardless.
