This evening, 1/2/14, between 5 and 7 p.m.:

The overpass on the Custis over the Glebe Road exit from I-66 was already getting glassy. Proceed with caution.

The wooden bridges on the W&OD (by the fire stations and Citizens Bridge): snow covered, slick. Proceed with caution.

The bridges over I-66 and I-395 near Dunn Loring were okay. The Idylwood Park hill was slick but passable.

Beyond Gallows, the snow is getting quite deep. The rim brakes got totally caked with snow.

Update: the section of the W&OD from Gallows to Hunter Mill improved a lot today. Some sections that were solid ice yesterday are slushy today. However, areas that don’t get lots of sun–and there are a number of them between Gallows and Park Street–still are icy. From Maple Ave to Hunter Mill, 95 percent of the trail is ice free and dry.

I got on the WOD at Vienna heading west this morning.

The Vienna to Hunter Mill section wasn’t too bad, some icy patches.

The worst sections as of this morning are:

    Just past Hunter Mill:

On the decline of the Buckthorn hill:

    Just past Wiehle Ave:

On the approach to Old Reston Ave:

After that there were still some icy patches – I get off the trail in Herndon.

I was on Schwalbe Marathon studs – 700×35.

I’ll report back on conditions with today’s “balmy” temps after tonight’s commute back to Vienna, but I suspect it will take this weekend’s temps to make a real dent in some of these bad spots.

    Evening update (Heading east):

Clear in Herndon into Reston, very few icy patches and at least one side of the trail is clear where there is ice.

After Old Reston Avenue – where it was icy this morning, it was mushy tonight and harder to navigate.

Approaching Wiehle Avenue – same as previous.

The climb up the Buckthorn hill was in much better shape (no picture).

But the approach to Hunter Mill Road was also pretty mushy.

Most of the way into Vienna was like this.

I just got home from riding it. There are some icy surprises between Glebe Road and Falls Church. There are a few icy spots between Glebe and Rosslyn, but most are avoidable. Be very careful.

Thanks! It was indeed doable with care. The hybrid felt downright light and peppy after riding a Cabi yesterday and rental “city bike” in while traveling last week. It was good to get back to the regular commute.

Does anyone know when Pierce mill section of bike trail will be fixed? It washed away in flood a few weeks ago. Tried emailing at http://www.nps.gov/rocr/contacts.htm but just got an error message.

When I get that error message, I send it directly to the superintendent at rocr_superintendent@nps.gov. I also note in the message that I get an error when attempting to submit through their web site.
