ParticipantThis past fall the deer were out thick on the W&OD. I’d come to expect them on the C&O, but not so much the W&OD side, had to increase my SA. And don’t get me started about the Kamikaze bunnies.

ParticipantSooooooooo yeah, the trail is still a mess. Clark’s Crossing to Hunter Mill was mostly ridable, Buckthorne involved a LOT of walking. Sunrise Valley to Sunset Hills was hit or miss, mostly crawling. I tried to ride into Reston, but a jogger passed me… that’s when I detoured onto Sunset Hills instead. Eventually arrived home despite the brutal, brutal, brutal headwinds…
Studded tires would have better luck than my road tires, but I won’t declare it “rideable” yet.
It’s beer time. Ride #472 just whupped my tail.

ParticipantSome of those joggers can be as fast as deer, and just as messy to collide with but I wouldn’t worry until the double strollers pass you. Cheers!

ParticipantThe W&OD from Sycamore to Shirlington is almost all clear with a couple problem spots on the wooden bridges and single tracking between Carling Springs and Arlington Blvd. 4 Mile Run from Shirlington to the Mt Vernon Trail is clear. Mt Vernon from 4 Mile Run to Lynn St is mostly clear, and can be ridden with just about any tire even where it is not.

ParticipantMorning bike commute conditions: 98% clear pavement. 2% ice patches. Watch out for the 2% where water pooled and froze.

I’m jealous, I wish they cleared the trail out this way. The only “clearing” out here are the tracks from the Dominion trucks.

Tried it same day as you and previous day. I’m coming from Cedar into Reston. Bad news. Said screw it and rode motorcycle instead.

ParticipantAny reports on Vienna to Reston? From passing the crossings on the street I see some clear pavement where the truck has driven through. Anyone ride it today (Thurs Feb 3rd) with any success?

I rode the other way from Vienna to Georgetown. The WOD was almost unrideable this morning between Vienna and I 495, and I have studded tires. Frozen ruts really bad. On way home I just rode side streets once I got to Gallows road.

Yep, studded tires as well and Tues it was a frozen brain shaker that made me turn around and Wed was a slushy on top and ice below. Not shocked it’s rutted cement now that it’s back to cold. Wish it would just be all snow or all rain. So much ice/mix around here.
Thanks for the update!

Ack.. Trade ya. Blasted a bambi @ 55mph on the way in this morning with the car on Rt7. Good couple thou $ damage to the car.
Got the car into the shop today. Estimate was $3770. I’d say you can see the cost savings of going car free was attractive, but the time I blew my shoulder hitting one on the bike the hospital and orthopedic surgeon and PT ran over $10k…

Ouch! Have had a few close calls on the bike myself with the local deer population. Still, the worst was the SUV who cut me off in Tysons. Crunch…snap.

ParticipantFrom another site: http://wandodtrailreport.blogspot.com/2011/02/conditions-in-reston-area.html
Hopefully this weekend rain/thaw will guarantee some open pavement come Monday.

Dang – sorry about that CCrew. Were you in your TJ? I did that about a year ago in mine, luckily the damage was superficial so nowhere near as costly to pretty her back up.
