I’ve heard it’s very kid-friendly. Kidical Mass DC usually does a ride to the festival. (I believe they’re taking the year off to allow the Kidical Mass DC family to grow, literally).

You can bring them on Kidical Mass Arlington rides. The next is June 16th, which is Father’s Day. I hear a little kid-free time is a great Father’s Day gift.

TDF would be fine for the kiddos!

I took my daughter last year, when she was 6. She enjoyed it, and the various costumes never set off my parental alarms.

I’m seriously considering bringing the 2 yr old to this. Just don’t know how I’ll ever get home with the single speed and trailer. Rosslyn seems cray and the little one has only ever been on an 8 mile ride so far. 25 RT would be a big milestone.

I need to make up the loss of Bike DC to my grandsons. They both got new bikes for Krimis and were really looking forward to the ride again this year until it’s ignominious demise. I didn’t think I would be able to attend on 1 June but now it’s an option. The New Belgium website has a cutesy video of the bike parade apparently thru the nearby streets before the real party starts I suspect. I haven’t been to this event myself so I must ask : on a scale of family friendly to drunken bacchanal where does Tour de Fat fall for an eleven year old and a 13 year old to attend?

Except for the costumes, it reminded me of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall — a bit more colorful. The bike parade is easy, the biggest challenge is riding the brakes for most of it. The ride is low, low speed with a lot of people.

The crowd is happy, relaxed and friendly.

I could be wrong, but the beer isn’t cheap, and it’s a daytime event. I didn’t see the usual debauchery you’d find at a bike event. (I meant that in an admiring way.)

Like that well known exercise in wretched excess known as BikeFest perhaps? :p

Yes, the TdF is definitely kid-friendly. I went last year and took some photos, if it would help you to visualize the scene:

My brother brought his kids last year (8 and 10) and is doing so again this year.

    Wretched Excess is my nickname.

That reminds me, I need brakes on the sparkle bike.

I attended last year and found it to be kid friendly. My 8-10 year olds would have loved it.
