Powerful Pete
ParticipantI would have been safely inside, but that dangerous cyclist rcannon100 forced me to ride in the dangerous weather. And now my shoes are really wet and my commute tomorrow AM will begin with squishy feet.
All because of him, I say.

ParticipantI was very glad to be inside around 8pm last night. I was less glad that I had been cocky about these storms being nothing, and had left my helmet outside… It was still a little damp this am.
Oh, well. When you get to ride on days like this, it’s all ok. Plus I passed two of my favorite newest Arlington-cycling-advocates (doc and teach – I don’t think they’re on the forum, but they’re making the hospital and the schools better from the inside).

ParticipantGot home and hopped into the shower, right as the storm hit. Good timing.

Sorry to hail on your parade, but that was dangerous:

Ron Holle, a former meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who tracks lightning injuries, estimates that 10 to 20 people in the United States are shocked annually while bathing, using faucets or handling appliances during storms. “There are a ton of myths about lightning,” he said, “but this is not one of them.”

ParticipantI greatly appreciated the free bike wash…and the fact that the storm had passed by the time I we wrapped up the 2nd WABA Arlington Action Committee meeting last night.

ParticipantHow bad was the storm last night? I didn’t ride yesterday and I didn’t have a good view out of a window at 8 pm.
As for hail, I’ve never ridden in a hailstorm, but I can say that ice pellets are quite annoying. I’ve ridden in that a few times. Ice pellets feel as though someone is sticking you with a safety pin in the face, over and over and over again. Ice pellets won’t kill you, but I wouldn’t recommend the experience.

I’m torn. On the one hand, I’ve never seen a tornado and really want to. On the other, I don’t really want to be near one. Ever. Just near enough that I can see, I guess.
Once upon a time I had to run to escape an overhead tornado…I ended up taking refuge in a funeral home. They took me halfway down the stairs to the basement and had me sit there, because all the dead bodies were in the basement.

Good to note: Don’t wait out storms in the basement of funeral homes. Everyone down there doesn’t make it out alive.

Has anyone on the board ever gotten caught out in a hailstorm before? My car has dents from one hailstorm, so I imagine it would hurt.
Never on the bike but it did happen while running a cross-country race in HS. As I recall, it was quite painful.

ParticipantNo tornado crossing northern Indiana today, but with sustained winds in the 20s and 30s and frequent gusts in the 40s, I had to abandoned my planned ride when I kept getting blown sideways.

You’re just riding the wrong direction.
