Time for bike lights

If you don’t have lights on your bike, please get some if you will be riding after dark. Previous threads have offered a number of suggested brands/models.

Heading WB Custis/W&OD yesterday at 5:30 am was passed by 46 EB riders(!), 43 had lights (which is pretty dang good) but only FOUR dimmed/covered them for me. That sucks. I had a monster headache by Vienna. Is it that EB riders aren’t used to passing folks going the other way since there are so few of us?

Good point. It only takes a second to put your hand over the megawatt light on your handlebars.

Just got a new light yesterday. The Kong Blinder 4V: Its rechargeable via USB and low profile. Excited to try it out as the darkness approaches.

FYI–I just put in a big order of the BikeArlington giveaway lights we’ve had the past two years. Like previous years, after the time change we’ll have a couple trail events to get people outfitted with lights. We’ll need lots of volunteers again!!

It’s also time for reflective gear… both for yourself and others. I’ve been handing out a few sets per week for the last 3 weeks. I also invested in a new vest. I usually don’t like reflective vests that much, but I found one that I like. It is made by a Canadian company called Cactus Creek.

A friend has one and I really like the quality and fit of it. I like that it has a long tail down the back to provide some reflectivity from behind… even when I’m in the drops.

I also picked up a few reflective, dangly triangles to hang off the back of the saddle on a few bikes. These things flap around and make good visibility. They move around enough to be really eye-catching.

I also suggest you test your reflective gear. Get a friend to take a flash photo of you while you ride. If you are blinding in the photos, then you’re doing well. If not, then it is time to gear up… ’cause you’re a Ninja.

I’m trying to remember the brand of the hyper all over reflective jacket the runner was wearing who stopped at the Bike Arlington light give away at the Custis/W&OD intersection last fall., I know it wasn’t Illuminite. Anyone know? I expect that it cost megabux.
