ParticipantYes, there are adapters for roof racks. I assume you are looking at 15mm TA? Something like http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/bike-carrier-accessories/thule-thru-axle-adapter-15mm-53015-_-53015999 if you have a Thule rack.

ParticipantYakima, Thule and a few others make adapters. Most of them do not have a way to lock the bike into the adapter, so someone can just take the axle out and make off with your bike without being hampered by a normal fork mount lock. Don’t worry about getting the brand to match your rack or trays, they will all work in all the racks.

It is why I added stout cable locks to my roof rack a few years ago. Rocky Mounts does make a locking one. I have never seen one in person and cannot attest to how well it works.

So, I’m looking a bike with through axles. I’ve got your standard fork mount roof rack. How do I/ can I use this rack with through axles? Is there a fork mount bike rack made for through axles?
Yep, and I just had Bikenetic order some since all of us have new El Mar’s with through Axles. Hopefully they’ll be in before the weekend. Jan says the Rocky Mount ones are way better than the other brands so I think that is what they are getting.

Indeed. When travelling I use locking skewers for the bikes on the roof…but I also lock them with a u-lock and cable (properly placed/protected so as to not bounce around and damage the bike/roof).

ParticipantThe adapters are surprisingly expensive but they work fine. I have one from “Filzer” which doesn’t seem to be sold in the US anymore but was a lot cheaper than the Yakima/Thule/Rockymounts options. I just throw a lock in the car if I’m expecting to stop for lunch where I can’t see the car.

I am not sure this is 100% true, but the reason they are so expensive is Hurricane Components patented the design quickly in the US and Canadian markets. So Thule, Yakima, Rocky Mounts, etc has to pay them a royalty fee per unit. They have also supposedly sent “lawyerly” letters to MTBR and other sites to take down Do-it-Yourself plans people were posting. No idea if this is true, partially true or just the rantings of conspiracy theorists.

ParticipantI just checked out of curiosity (I looked for it a few months ago for my brother) – it’s back: http://www.amazon.com/Filzer-Fork-Adapter-15mm-FA-15/dp/B005V1L2VE#
$20 can’t be beat.

Yep, I ended up buying a couple of these two years ago and they work great. Sometimes it takes a little wiggling to get the axle through, but that is the same with the Thule and Yakima adapters that I have used.
