ParticipantI got it. The secret seems to be “keep wiggling it around in there until it goes through”.

Is there some secret to getting a new brake cable into a Shimano Tiagra triple? I can’t get it lined up so it will go through. So far Google has turned up nothing.
This link is the source for Shimano tech docs on all Tiagra components. Assembly, setup, parts listings – they’re all there!
More accurately, this links to Shimano’s entire product line tech library for road & MTB group sets, pedals, wheels, tools, and more. Its the honey hole for Shimano-san.

ParticipantFor a flawless cable pass thru installation L shifter has to be on the smallest chainring setting. R shifter has to be on the smallest cog setting. Also make sure you don’t have a cable head broken into the mechanism.

Done, but… by thetejon, on FlickrSo, everything was great, except I cut the cable housing for the rear brake too short. Not a huge deal, though it means another trip to the bike shop. Not a bad effort for my first try, though.

ParticipantRelated note: anyone need two lightly used brake interruptor levers? Good condition. Free to good home.

I have only know that to matter for derailleur/shifter cabling. Brakes just slide through behind the open lever.
Sometimes a sharp pointy tool — like a sharpened spoke is helpful to guide cables around corners leaving the brifter mechanism.
A final recommendation is a 25-foot bag of jagwire ripcord (brake/universal housing). Makes cutting housing too short not a big deal. I typically cut slightly longer than I need and setup the housing with no cables in it first, just to cut down to right length.

^ This.
After buying my bike on CL every component came off and got the full clean twice/inspect/refresh/replace/lube treatment. Bike was on the stand with the bars on but no head spacers fitted. Carefully cut and ran the cables, then discovered that the front brake outer was too short when the head spacers were in place. Couldn’t bring myself to remove the new bar tape, so I grafted an extra few inches of outer cable with heatshrink tube. Shameful, but its been there ever since. Little white arrow marks the spot.

Jagwire L3 is what I recommend. $5.00 x 4 feet of housing is usually enough for a build.

ParticipantI’m giving myself a C on the tape installation, and a B on the rest of it. I successfully got the brake cables out, back in, and functional with only one extra trip to the bike shop and zero injuries. This is my third time wrapping tape, and I’m not terribly impressed by my handiwork. Definitely an improvement over the bare bars I’ve been riding the last few days, though.
