ParticipantThis has been a completely putrid day at work – stupid questions and failing security audits and my coworker’s last day so now I have to answer all the dumb questions and we can’t hire a replacement until they work out our contract and it is about dang time to go for a bike ride to get a beer.

I vote for moving inside; it’s too damn humid out!
I will have to sit outside, in a breeze, it was quite steamy this morning and I don’t want to fumigate the place….

ParticipantIt was awesome seeing everyone again! Luckily, we somehow avoided all the rain that we were supposed to get, with only a few drops felt on the way to get there.
Since some of you were interested in my caving exploits, here’s the video of my trip to Aqua Cave that I was telling you about:

(Note: this subject came up because Arlingtonrider and I found out that we have both visited the same cave years apart called “Breathing Cave,” and we confirmed this after I described the entrance and certain aspects of the cave because I have a photographic memory)
Long story short, while I went to JMU I became a member of the MUSG (Madison University Student Grotto) and later the president and a trip leader. My weekends were spent either tossing my bike in my car, driving somewhere, and biking, or caving. Basically, I like mountains, whether it be biking on them, hiking on them, camping on them, or caving in them! Aqua Cave was the first cave I ever went to, but the video is a 10 year anniversary of that trip. If I were still living in Harrisonburg, I’d probably have split my time again between biking and caving!
Here are a couple of photos from another recent caving trip I went on (I believe this is Links Cave because it has a second entrance).

ParticipantOiy! Caving is seriously scarier and more claustrophobic than I even imagined.
Not even if you paid me…..
You and ArlingtonRider are serious adrenaline junkies.

ParticipantThanks Kathy for organizing. Good times, no rain and nice to put faces with names.

You’d be surprised how large some of the underground caverns can get (it can make you think twice when you assume you’re standing on “solid ground” on a mountain)! Regarding the claustrophobic aspect, I have actually taken people who are claustrophobic on caving trips (one time the person didn’t even tell me she was claustrophobic and had gone to conquer her fear – don’t do that!). It requires extra planning, and you just have to choose the right cave that has no crawls or tight spaces (unless you go much deeper).
Additional information: while there is some great caving to be had in Virginia and West Virginia, the best caving in the country can be done in the TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) region. If you’re in that area, you could even combine caving with your biking trip (plus, if it’s mountain biking, you won’t care about the extra mud)!
