Heat index hit 95 and they’ve issued a hyperthermia alert. Stay cool and hydrated out there.
Time for the old “cup of cold water over jersey before leaving office.” Sure you look like you have hyperthyroidism, which I do, but it keeps your man chest cool. Could also work for lady chests, I’m not a scientition.

ParticipantI still prefer summer to winter. Hot weather makes me a little uncomfortable. Cold weather makes me miserable. I’m never moving to Alaska.

^^ New favorite quote.
The advantage of lady chests is you can put ice in your sports bra.
Actually people with man chests can put ice in their sports bras too, not tryin’ to be bra-ist or nothin’.

ParticipantWhy has no one invented the ice pack-gel chamois yet? Seriously, put it in the freezer for and hour or two until it gets a bit of freezer squish then BAM cooling down downtown no diggity.

ParticipantEnded up being not too bad – the headwind got to me more than the heat.

ParticipantThe worst thing about my ride yesterday was the dumb bug who had the nerve to fly right into my eye. And stay there until I fished him out. Ouch.

ParticipantHoly headwind, Batman! I’m counting double miles for the trip home today. I pedaled twice as far as I went! Just stopped in Shirlington for a frosty cold lemonade before I tackle The Hill. I believe my face has discovered a new shade of red.

ParticipantI don know Kel, that “bicycle” your sitting on in your pic – it looks like it has motor assist. Doesnt that thang result in miles getting subtracted? :p

I managed to inhale bugs Saturday and Monday.
I think the other people on the W&OD wondered what the TB patient was doing on a bike.

Took a big wasp in the chest on the motorcycle years ago at highway-plus speed. The problem was that it wound up inside my full-face helmet right above my right eye. Alive. And pissed. Fastest full-stop and helmet removal I ever achieved.

ParticipantSome friends and I did a DC->River Road->Poolsville->White’s Ferry->Leesburg (lunch)->W&OD->DC ride on Sunday, about 90 miles. I rode the cargo bike, mostly to haul an extra 2.5 gallons of water for us and because I knew we’d be taking it slower due to the heat.
We stopped for rehydration, shade and food every 10-15 miles. I spent at least the second half of the ride riding about 3-4 mph slower than I usually do and my break requirements kept getting longer and longer. Probably spent an hour or so at the Whole Foods in Vienna trying to get my core temperature down and my water levels back up closer to the normal range.
Heat exhaustion isn’t something to play around with.
My goal is to do some shorter morning or evening rides (30-40 miles) on hot and humid days, until I’m acclimatized, before attempting longer rides on those days.
