I live by Wunderground’s radar. They have a hybrid terrain and map overlay, which is pretty precise. Animate the map and you can determine roughly how quickly the storm’s approaching and if it’ll hit you, how strong, and if there’s lightening, etc.

There’s the mistake, you need to go to the office first, then ‘go out for a cup of coffee’

My new job is only a block from Swing’s, so starting in August, that’ll be reality!

Alternately, fire off that first email of the day from VPN and then enjoy a cup of joe.

What is the deal? We can’t even get a freakin rumble of thunder here in Crystal City, let alone a downpour with some lightning and wind. I was sorely disappointed by this cold front. I trust the rest of you made it home in one piece this evening. Around 5pm, the radar was still pretty clear so I doubt anyone even had to deal with any rain.

I felt about 10 raindrops while I was out running. But it was an intense 10 raindrops.

I got caught in the storm on someone’s porch on a country road somewhere around Lovettsville. The people who live there were very nice, and hopefully not too freaked out by the strange guy taking shelter from the enormous lightning bolt that freaked him out.

Did you knock on the door, or just hang out on the porch and they noticed you?

I haven’t had to do that yet and I just wonder what the proper etiquette is. The couple of times I’ve had to take shelter I found a vacant church, an empty school (summer), and a strip mall with everything a cyclist could ever want (grocery store).

I’ve taken shelter under a school’s front overhang and the Delecarlia Tunnel on the CCT.

I knocked a couple of times, no answer. Dogs started barking and then someone came out an investigated. A bit awkward. :) I would have picked anything public if I could find it, but all I saw were the big power lines I was riding under.

Yeah sometimes someone’s porch or garage is all you can get to… thinking about it more I would say that knocking or ringing the doorbell is the best technique to ask if it’s ok and just let them know you’re there as opposed to just squatting on someone’s porch. Especially in VA! Last weekend we stopped at a frozen custard place in Ashburn after a ride and some dude came in packing heat. Seriously? Is a gun necessary to buy a little custard?

What you don’t realize is that 3/4 of the customers were packing, they just had concealed carry permits.
